I’m underneath the capital in the subterranean shivering grounds(?) shits crazy. I FINALLY found some somber smithing stones 7 so I upgraded my winged scythe and my holy batons to +9. I had somber 8’s and 9’s already I just never had the 7’s. Tons of big boys down here that do magic that tracks you.

Player's Log: I believe I have completed everything I can possibly do currently in Altus. The hardest bit was the dragon, the Hero's Grave was actually less bothersome than I expected, and I liked the light mechanic.

I think it's time for me to progress some NPC quests, starting with Sellen.

Okay, wait, looks like I'll need to go to Gelmir to do Sellen's quest and I'm not ready for that yet. So maybe I'll switch gears back to Ranni. See if I'm finally ready for the gargoyles...

I mean, if you're following my posts, I tried to fight them on two other occasions and failed, so this is only a victory that came from continuing to build up my character in more appropriate locations and coming back stronger.

I do read them all, but I can’t always keep track! Now that I’m done nokron I’m trying to figure out what I should do next. I’m doing deep root just because that’s where the coffin took me.

Player's Log: And I remain in Deeproot for the time being.

Since my last log, I decided to continue Ranni's quest since I finished Selivus' quest and repented my sins. I gave her the blade she was looking for, and then me and plushie Ranni went on an adventure in the city of night. Weird that the assassins that are after her kind of look like Blaidd.

Anyway, rather than try to continue her quest further, I decided to switch gears to Fia's quest, since the guide suggests that's my next step. And so here I am, in Deeproot Depths, trying to make headway.

My favorite thing in Elden Ring is when the game finally throws me a bone and gives me a perfect vantage point and the tools to properly use it. Case in point: I entered an ant nest and was on a ledge above all these ants and their queens, and I had all these bolts that I'd just been saving up for a special occasion. It was a massacre, I'm sad to say.

Tomorrow my first step is going to be trying to take down the mausoleum, as I understand it's the reason for all the soldiers around the area. If I take it down, all the soldiers should disappear, from what I've been told, and this will make exploration much easier for me.

Just beat Priscilla (the boss of the Painted World) but didn’t get her tail. Ugh…
Now I have to farm to fight Lord Gwyn. Double ugh…

Player's Log: Deeproot Depths is complete, including the dragon. Fia's questline had an... unsatisfying ending, and I'm starting to really see the GRRM influence at this point. Everyone I meet is going to die, aren't they.

Anyway, my next stop is to continue with Ranni's quest in the Lake of Rot and open up that area of Liurnia I've yet to explore.

I also achieved some small things I'd forgotten about: I killed the Crucible Knight and Misbegotten in Redmane Castle, killed another Crucible Knight using the Four Belfries to go to Nokron, and used the final Belfry warp to see what Crumbling Farum Azula looks like. Looks like a fun place!

Pet peeve with large enemies like dragons. Really wish I could lock on to their feet instead of just their head and body. Very annoying.

Beat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. Took me maybe four, five tries? In the last run, I was so frantic I didn't even realize I'd accidentally switched to my bow and I shot him to death. Wild stuff.

However, this fight very much adds to my frustration over the way target locking works in this game. I know others have commented on it, and I know it'll only get worse.

Players log: Spent the evening exploring limgrave some more. Met Boc and cleared out the coastal cave. The boss(es) in there took me about 5 attempts, which for my first and only boss so far I'm satisfied with. Definitely wouldn't say I'm good at combat yet but I think im improving, slowly.

Getting a bit bolder with enemies. Took out some of the big troll things around limgrave which was fun. Met a few enemies that I left alone very quickly though - took one swing at the huge octopuses on the beach, saw how little damage I caused, and ran like hell.

Checked out the dragon burnt ruins or whatever they're called - fortunately had heard about the chest that transports you so when the smoke started coming out I got back very quickly. Did manage to get ambushed by the dragon though, which one-shotted me.

What's the deal with the magic footprints or whatever they are going round in a loop on the limgrave beach? Strange.

Finished the evening by finding a little track up from stormhill to get to Liurnia. First site of grace I came to gave me the option to go to the roundtable hold, so that's where I've left it for today.

Here's a fun idea: get in the path of the footprints and "interact" with it. It'll be great.

Player's Log: Okay, I completed Ranni's quest, and just like with all the other quests, it didn't end well for some people. And now I am a sad Tarnished.

I also did almost everything in that section of Liurnia, except for killing the three small dragons, because no, and Ringleader's Evergaol, because no. I tried the latter but he rinsed me, which means I'll save that for another time.

Since I have nothing else to do in that sector of the world, I decided to return to Altus and start exploring the Mt. Gelmir area. I've already made great headway in that department.

I feel like by the time I reach the location of the map for this area, I won't need it anymore, as I'll already have been everywhere except for exploring the innards of the Volcano Manor.

    Anyway, that's for tomorrow.

I left the Ringleader Evergaol until after I'd done the final boss because I struggled with it that much. For 99% of the game I just two-handed my katana, but I had to switch to a shield to beat that one

I'm really not convinced I'm using my shield properly, or it isn't very good. If I just hold down L1 while I'm battling should that do enough, or do I actually need to time how I use it?
