Their first album was one the most significant albums I discovered on ap.net. Absent Sounds has always been my overall—songwriting, riffs, production, complex song structure—just so many things converging. & kind of the most realized version of their early sound. But both of their albums since then have really added so much to the constellation that is FIL. This new one is doing that again—the grungy/shoegazey thing is both new for them and makes total sense at the same time. Thiiiis!
The drumming on this is so great, I think that’s the single biggest thing that stands out to me, doesn’t remind me of the previous records. Adds a lot of energy. Wish this was longer, but of course always grateful to have new FIL
This is great; not sure it reaches the heights of EFBN or Dimly Lit for me but I think I'm higher on those two than most people anyways. Not sure if it's the Joe Vann albums allowing him to give this a little more kick but it's refreshing
This is the song that alludes most to the direction on this album imo and it's one of my favorites and I never hear anyone talk about it so I'm super stoked about that
Really enjoying this. First 3 albums are all so impactful on my music taste and have enjoyed everything since but this is probably my favorite since Absent Sounds.
Joe is so ridiculously talented and his releases are so damn consistent that it's tough to pick a favorite, mostly just depends on what kind of mood I'm in.
I had wasted my chance to listen to it earlier than friday, cause I was just too tired at night (still am probably). It sounds great, Joey knows what he's doing here, I really always love everything from FIL still, I'm surprised though this actually hit a bit better loud on speakers by the second spin
This one’s landing pretty great for me, I find myself putting it on almost every time I open my music app
Haven't listened to them in years, since when are they this shoegazey? This is extremely my shit so far tho, I'm just surprised
Well, the shoegaze vibe is kinda new for FIL tbh. The previous album was much more indie pop oriented (I obviously still love it though! It's long, but has some really great moments and tones). You can probably only get some hints of those sounds within the past catalog, and now at the same time you can still hear a lot of that Mew influence etc.
It was a great show. You could tell they were getting their sea legs for the first half playing new songs and it being their first show for a while, but once they hit the pocket it was excellent. And I think each show they're just gonna be more and more in their element.
I'd put this right on the same shelf as EFBN. Great records. Dimly Lit is a misunderstood masterpiece. Garden Bed? No One Else? ULS? It is long, but it's his best record. So many great ideas. DL > HV/EFBN > AS > AB
