Finally watched this. And struggled to get through the awkwardness to the humor. I will say the final scene where he loses it on the guys was solid. I think I was too distracted by worrying if he is autistic which was causing all his issues to notice it’s supposed to be funny at times which is such a suburban dad problem. Good laughs throughout but uneven with feeling things got super outlandish.

I don’t think there is anything that would lead to believe that he is autistic. That’s an interesting take though. I think that it’s more serious undertone is an essay on loneliness showing how a husband/father in his circumstances can be extremely unstable. It drives me crazy when Tammy eludes to him being a narcissist. He clearly had been carrying the weight of supporting her and her son while neglecting himself.

that’s my read on main theme and why I appreciate this “comedy” for other reasons than the jokes.

I can relate to the awkwardness that comes with being a male and trying to make new friends in middle age. For some reason, I’m often a more awkward version of myself during initial interactions. So much so that I am noticing it as it’s happening in real time and going “WTF?” in my head simultaneously.

It’s more amusing to me than anything when it happens as I’m fortunate to have and maintain a number of good friendships that I’ve made in kindergarten, high school, college, and grad school. I just don’t recognize myself in those interactions some times and have no idea what the root cause is.

I mean the signs are there to me. The fact that he prefers only one line of clothing likely due to sensory preferences and is fixed in this thinking. Also, frequent situations where he is regurgitating lines in social settings from what others have said because he likely does not know what to say and is masking. To the limited scope of interests such as marvel movies, etc. While you are characterizing him as feeling stressed in supporting the family, I can only see him having low levels of empathy and awareness of other's needs or emotions which is common in autism. He had no idea about his wife's feelings most of the movie, and even when he did he got side tracked to prove a point to Austin in the end.

I think there are ways of making all the social commentary points desired about male loneliness but put the situations in more realistic contexts. Most of the movie I basically questioned everyone's reliability due to how many scenarios where wildly insane to say nothing of the multiple "I can see the future" scenarios. You can make a dark comedy without every thing feeling so jarring.

Diagnose Connor O’Malley’s character but use the full extended scene where he starts out just talking to Tim Robinson and then becomes the craziest guy he’s ever seen in his life.
