I put the Graveyard song on a Christmas playlist and that’s the furthest I’d ever go to listen to that album ever again.
*Cracks knuckles* England, Keep My Bones Love, Ire and Song Tape Deck Heart FTHC Positive Songs for Negative People Poetry for the Deed Be More Kind No Man's Land (Haven't listened to Sleep is for the Week)
Really haven’t listened to him much over the last 5 something years as the recent albums have really, really soured that desire. However: Tier 1 - EKMB, LI&S, TDH (no specific order) Tier 2 - PSFNP, POTD Tier 3 - SIFTW, FTHC …. big gap …. Tier 4 - BMK … endless gaps …. Tier whatever - NML
This is pretty solid but I actually would put LI&S in tier 2, just never got into that one as a whole the way England and Tape Deck are
I don't think Frank is the type to run out of things to say so much what he has to say has gotten far less interesting as he moved from being a struggling musician not sure where he'd sleep the next night to a successful guy making very good money... Some bands music does fine with that transition, but franks not as much. You lose that heart that was in his early stuff and suddenly there really isn't that much left
“It’s cool to be nice, and lame to be mean, at least that’s the way it seems” There I wrote a 2024 Frank Turner song in 10 seconds
“My mom told me When I was only 3 That the world can be pretty shitty so I try to be kind To everyone that I find Because you never know what’s happening in someone’s mind”
Once upon a time over a decade ago I would be losing sleep in excitement for times like these on the cusp of a new album announcement from Frank. but man oh man do I have zero hope it’ll be good
And at the same time I feel like he believes he does have something to say and that is what is disappointing
I just find it hard to be mad about a decline in Frank's lyrics - every album has had songs I like, he's a great performer, and has a big back catalog. I don't disagree that the sentiments in the lyrics are becoming more basic and "old man shakes fist" but it just doesn't really bother me.
Seems like the case from what I'm seeing from UK folks via Facebook. New album is called "Undefeated" and track #1 is the next single ("Do One").
I'm a massive Frank fan and even have a 'We Are What We Believe' tattoo, but the best way I can describe these new songs is a parody of white man with a guitar. He's always been a white dude with a guitar, but these new songs feel hackneyed and tired. And I enjoyed FTHC!
