If there's a producer that can assuage some nervousness after Be More Kind she is definitely it. Between enlisting her as producer and describing these songs as 'sprawling' & 'experimental' I am definitely super intrigued to hear this album.
We all seem very nervous and hesitant after BMK. The problem is I don’t think Frank feels those same nerves or concerns we do as he is so proud of that album. So I don’t know yet how to feel. He is literally a top 3 favorite of mine and has yet to disappoint me until last year, but man, that album hit me hard in the worst way.
I am nervous, less because of BMK which I think aged pretty well actually (for me), but more because of the "sprawling/experimental" commentary. I don't want this dude to get too far away from what we all love about him. Still think he has an angry loud anti-Trump album in him that I'm surprised we haven't seen. Shit, Sand In the Gears never even made an album, he just threw that tune away.
A real studio version of "Sand in the Gears" is on the alternate universe album where "1933" fits right into the tracklist and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb and "Make America Great Again" is the angry ass-kicking anthem that title and subject matter deserve.
In general, I always sort of find if a producer does good work on previous material, there is no reason that will stop for their next project:Also, if they are good, they will adapt to who they are working with opt desires style. It’s 8 songs of something a little different according to him. I’d rather Frank release something new than wait. BMK has some songs that have grown on me, but I think overall, since it’s not his most beloved album and he loves writing music, keep it coming.
"Sand in the Gears" sucked. its been a while since I've really liked a Frank song, hopefully this new album is a lot better than what he's been doing recently.
I am the opposite of you here. If we aren't going to get anything like pre-BMK Frank, than I rather he do something different altogether. If the typical Frank Turner sound is dead, I rather he stay that way than try really hard to make music he genuinely doesn't have the passion for anymore (if that's the case-because I have have no idea. I am still trying to figure out how Be More Kind happened.).
Did he say it was only 8 songs? I know he wrote album 8 but didn’t see the song count ... let me know if I missed it!
Sand in the Gears was neat because it was out on Trump’s inauguration date. However, I haven’t revisited it since and will honestly probably hate it more after hearing MAGA as it’ll be even more cheesy.
I don't think "Sand in the Gears" is a particularly good song, but I think it is better than a significant number of the songs on Be More Kind. I think I prefer my Frank songs to have some teeth, some anger. I think I just expected more from a Frank Turner album that was taking on some of the terrible shit going on in the US these days than a toothless, tame and minor album that's just telling everyone to be a little nicer to each other.
Anyone have an extra ticket for night 1 of Lost Evenings? I'll be in town and I would love to see a Frank show
Yeah, tapping Catherine Marks was a solid decision. I'm excited for Frank's next musical output. I'm enjoying his book right now, though, so he always keeps me on board and interested in some way!
