Just listened to "Redemption" for the first time in a while and it made me real sad about how bad this album is in comparison.
Yeah i haven’t reallymreturned to this album at all since it came out and since before I saw him last month. Even though a lot of the songs translate well live, it still doesn’t do much for me But “Redemption”, now that is a great fucking song.
Pretty much all of Make America Great Again is pretty bad - can't even add it to my 'Fuck Trump" playlist because you hear that song blaring out of someone's car and it sounds like a pro-Trump album. I mean you clip that chorus at the right part and you have your new Fox and Friends opener.
To me, peak frank was EKMB. Thats a desert island record for me. TDH was great, and i love that album, but i havent deeply enjoyed anything since TDH.
He played Redemption at one of those 36 Boston shows last month I was at, and it was absolutely glorious. Such an incredible ending to a song!
EKMB is far and away my favourite of his too, though I really enjoy TDH and PS4NP, probably even enjoy the latter more. Haven’t listened to the new record since my first listen around release and really have no desire to go back. I did throw “Don’t Worry” and “The Blackout” into some playlists though.
Yeah, i love Frank, but that song comes across really, really awkwardly. I get the sentiment, but the execution is not great. On the whole, album is ok. Not great, not terrible. Be More Kind and The Lifeboat are my two favourites.
Two of the songs on this record sound like Spotify jingles (for anyone who uses the free version like me).
This is in my top 3 Frank songs so it feels unfair as a comparison, but nothing is even 1/10th as good as that song.
First off, congratulations to Mr. Turner. They both look very happy. Now, getting down to business: any real b-sides been released for this yet??? Not acoustic versions of album tracks, but legit other songs. I remember he was in the studio for what felt like ages and referenced having a ton of songs. He usually trickles out a few b-sides with EPs and such by now..... I just kind of pretend this album doesn't exist because I can't really reconcile *not* liking something of his as much as I don't like this. If it wasn't Frank Turner I would have shut it off immediately and never given it a second thought. I tried. I did.
Same. I really just can’t believe someone with as much passion and energy as Frank would release something so lifeless and boring. 1933, Blackout, and Be More Kind are only songs I come back to. Funny enough, I still saw him 3 times this year and am amped for Lost Evenings in Boston!
Some songs caught my attention right away. Albums a grower for some songs, and some still haven’t clicked yet. Don’t Worry and Little Changes have some charm to add to the the songs mentioned above. Also, Survival Blues has continued to grow on me more and more since seeing him live. Bet yes...bring out the b-sides!
It’s definitely grown on me upon first listen. Still can’t listen to Going Nowhere all the way through. Something about it is cringe to me.
There are maybe a couple of songs that I think are alright, otherwise the whole thing is pretty cringe to me.
Its gotten to the point of unlistenable for me. I cant even find much redemption (pun intended) in songs i used to revisit like 1933 and blackout.
Yeah, my list of disappointments from this year is probably longer than in any other year I can think of, and this one is near the top of that list. Don’t think I’ve listened to it since June.
It's been a very strange music year for me. Lots of albums that, like this one, feel like they came out two years ago.
