I wouldn't agree with the word "most." I mean there is a difference from like.... a Bayside, or NOFX, or Ariana Grande, or Kygo.... where most of their material does have a certain "sounds the same" issue. I would definitely argue that MANY artists you just simply can not say that about. The Beatles, Bon Iver, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Say Anything, Kanye West.... these are just random artists that come to mind but there are countless others that I would NEVER say their albums "sound the same"
I feel like you just named a bunch of the most successful artists of all time (partially because they are so versatile) and then people who have been lost/confused like Bemis and Cyrus. And I'd still argue that Bemis kind always sounds the same.
I mean, I literally just named the first artists I could think of haha. I could keep going with more and more and more artists who don't sound the same all the time. Doesn't matter though, my overall point is that sounding the same depends on who you are talking to and how involved they are with the discography, but there are plenty of artists that don't simply sound the same because they are the artist they are
It's really a solid little album. It's just missing its own version of "Get Better" and maybe one more super high-energy song......it's a tempo problem, not a "bad songs" problem, for me. The EDM-ish touches on a few songs don't bother me like I thought they would. Looking forward to seeing him and The Menzingers next week.
The album has grown on me a fair amount. Lot of good stuff in here still, and the new songs sounded great live.
Saw FT in Philly last night amd he was awesome as usual. The new songs all sound much better in a live setting than on record. He played: 1933 Little Changes MAGA Brave Face Be More Kind and Blackout Aside from his typical set staples, it was also really cool to hear “Father’s Day” “Tattoos” and “St. Christopher’s Coming Home”
I re-sequenced this today, while working on my mid-year list, and it's mindblowing how much more I like my version.
1. Don't Worry 2. Make America Great Again 3. Little Changes 4. Brave Face 5. Going Nowhere 6. 21st Century Survival Blues 7. 1933 8. There She Is 9. Blackout 10. The Lifeboat 11. Be More Kind I debated whether or not to ditch "Get It Right," because I do like that song. But I'm not sure it fits anywhere but at the end, and I like the title track as a closer a lot more.
Yeah I really don’t need MAGA, Lifeboat, Common Ground, or Get It Right. They just don’t do anything for me. That’s an interesting track list. I think 1933 as an opener would be cool too. DEF all in for Be More Kind as the closer. I’m sure I’ve mentioned this multiple times. It would be such a solid ending and is probably my favorite track on this album.
It's crazy to me how little I want to listen to anything on this album. I've loved almost everything he's put out and I just don't like this at all.
Exactly the same. Very doubtful I'll return to this in the future. Genuinely don't "love" any songs on it, and only very few that I can tolerate. It's a shame, but I'm just glad he has 4 or 5 other records which are absolute gold for when I want a fix.
I saw him last night in Orlando and I thought all the new songs sounded great. It’s pretty incredible how big the crowd has grown over the last couple years. He asked who was at their first Frank Turner show and at least 75% of the crowd raised their hands. He said he’s opened House of Blues many times but it was the first time he’s headlined, and he managed to sell it out.
In Boston he sold out an arena last year! It’s so crazy how he keeps growing...as do his show counts in Boston. I think he has 6 or 7 coming up. His music is so accessible and it doesn’t hurt he is EXCELLENT live!
Yeah, that Boston run is insane. Last time he played here it was with Gogol Bordello, and while he definitely had a good showing, he was definitely the lesser of the two bands in terms of crowd turnout and response. Considering the lukewarm response to this record, the fact that it sold less than the last one (I think at least), and that he’s never had a mainstream hit it seems odd that his fan base would grow like that, but I’m thrilled for him nonetheless.
This album didn't really work for me, but I am thrilled for Frank Turner that it seems like people are really enjoying it and its bringing him new fans. I couldn't be happier for him. I am definitelty going to take Craig's altered tracklist for a test-drive later on. I tried tinkering with one myself but I honestly struggled to come up with more than a few tracks that I enjoyed enough to do so. I can't see myself ever enjoying Little Changes as I really do not enjoy that song at all, but I'm gonna give it the ol' college try out of respect for Frank. If we're lucky, maybe we'll get some kind of official live release somewhere down the line with these songs.
I like MAGA. Don't understand the hate. Seeing him tonight. Really fired up, and excited to see the Menzingers for the 1st time too
Make sure you get there in time for Homeless Gospel Choir! Derek is hilarious and puts on a great set of his own.
