He re recorded sand in the gears and recorded live audience vocals on his last day of tracking the album, so there’s definitely a different version of it out there. The album is ok, but like a lot of Frank albums I too will be adding songs to my Frank playlist and likely not returning to the full thing.
Frank is my fav artist so he can do no wrong in my eyes. That being said, this album doesn’t quite click with me at all, but I don’t fault him for trying something different. Just very dull and forgettable, which is a shame since after hearing 1933 i was pretty excited. Oh well, will be eagerly anticipating the next release :P
I do think I'm going to be okay with this album. I've already convinced myself that this may be his worst. Going in with these expectations may help. I do enjoy Blackout and 1933 so I think I'll be content with whatever this sounds like.
I will always see him live, and I think i would get more into some songs I dont like in a live setting, this was the case with PS4NP. seeing him live is always so much fun. he is such a great showman, and his shows are always just fun drunk singalongs.
I’ve seen him 3 times and will be seeing him at so far 3 of his 6 Boston shows. He and the Menzingers are toss ups for me for best live bands. He’s fantastic every time!
You know what I mean - a year or two longer. But either way, I think a little more time for each song to develop would do a world of good. Everything just sounds so bland on this record, no edge to anything. I totally agree with the person below, listening back to songs off EKMB and the music and delivery of some of the songs would fit songs like MAGA so much better. 1933 is the only one on the record where I totally get the angle he was going for and it hits, for me at least.
I will say, the new songs sound soo much better live. Up there with anything he's released live, albeit maybe with slightly worse lyrics or whatever, it's just the recorded versions that sound kinda bland.
Little Changes sounds like he listening to those weird "tropical" songs by NFG, FOB, etc, and decided to do his own. Only it's better.
After reading all of these comments I'm going to jump into this and hope the outcome is better than what I am currently expecting. Wish me luck, kiddos.
Just wanted to say this is the first time I've ever listened to Frank Turner, and I'm actually enjoying this album.
I haven't listened to the new one yet, but oh man welcome aboard. You have a summer/fall's worth of albums to take in! Tape Deck Heart, England Keep My Bones, and Love, Ire & Song would be the three I'd check out asap. Then move to PSFNP (unless you're looking for some more positive/happier lyrics then come here sooner).
Listening to this now. I'm a pretty casual fan, but I'm enjoying this. Little Changes was the stand out so far. I enjoy how breezy it is.
How these three didn't make EKMB I'll never know. Include these three and drop another three, and the record is maybe as good as LI&S.
Which three would you substitute? I am struggling to decide which to drop after Eulogy and English Curse. I'm a big fan of the rest...but also big fan of those 3 b-sides.
Eulogy is a perfect opener for that album, def wouldn't drop that. English Curse, If Ever I Stray, Wessex Boy and Glory Hallelujah are all easy cuts for me. Everything else I love.
Glory Hallelujah would be cut without a moment hesitation. English curse because he should have replaced it with the live version of Barbabra Allen. One Foot Before The Other because it's a bit of an oddity in that album. The three b-sides are better than anything on that album bar I Am Disappeared and maybe Redemption, so anything you switch them with improves the album.
I love Eulogy as an opener as well, but because I love that album A LOT I was struggling to choose another haha. It's intriguing to me you'd drop If Ever I Stray that was THE song that really got me into Frank so I have a special place for that track. Glory Hallelujah is understandable but I enjoy it!
I love the last three tracks tbh. I would actually cute "Little Changes," "Make America Great Again," and probably "Brave Face"
yeah Little Changes and Brave Face are my least fav. Little Changes is some of his worst writing i can think of tbh. the "up/down, lost/found" bit in the bridge specifically
also very few people were in here saying it's "bad", just not as good as his other work, nothing any more wrong with that than someone thinking it's great
