What I love about this record is that they've upped their songwriting so much, especially melodically. Today at work, I think I had melodies from at least five different tracks stuck in my head. It was great.
I own multiple variants of my favorite albums from my favorite artists. I love this album, and am thinking about double dipping.
psh listening to records is for chumps i let mine collect dust and only have them to show my kids music i liked via a physical format
somewhat related if someone has a 45 rpm copy of King of Limbs play it at 33 it is an amazing experience - no joke
The song “Nearer My God” popped up on my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist and I was instantly drawn to it. I checked out the rest of the record and I love it—super eclectic but still feels pretty cohesive. I tried to get into their previous records and they’re not really clicking. Is that normal? I feel like this is leagues above their old stuff, but maybe I just haven’t spent enough time with them.
Dealer is a more chill album with some amazing crescendos mixed in. It's atmosphere is so dense and warm. That album just kind of flows along and it's easy to get swept away in it and let your mind drift with out it feeling boring or unengaging. Great for a Night Drive or being really high and taking a bath haha. Night Channels should still go down as one of thier best songs, even with all the amazing songs on NMG. Edit: If you think the back half of Five Cups should be trimmed, Dealer might not be for you.
Too say for me to say this is better. I’m liking this more and more with each listen, and much of it is quite immediate, but it’s also challenging and dense. I know this can apply to almost any album, but there is so much to take in here that it’ll be weeks before I can stack it against Dealer (I already like it more than Albatross tho). Either way, this band definitely has one of the best three album streaks in recent memory.
I agree, there was definitely a big jump. But I don't think the difference in quality is as big as say, Identity Crisis VS Vheissu. Maybe a bigger jump than Home, Like No Place Is There VS Goodness. (Of course these analogies only work if we rank Thrice and The Hotelier albums similarly haha)
Hotelier was not a jump, I feel they just set out to tackle a different thing same energy and power but focused on something different
I own two bc you had to buy one to go see them last week. I went with my fiancée hence two records lol
I love playing this record in vinyl, already 3 spins. It’s just got that nice warm sound that fits vinyl so well. I said this before but crown candy just works better on the vinyl for me, the master is way more open. Also, cool thing, the nearer my god to thee clip at the end of game shark is longer on the vinyl master, it plays the entire song.
Usually go for the black if I have it, but sometimes I want to spin mewithoutYou (and Rainbow Signs) on a rainbow disk, and sometimes I whip out the 180g because I don’t care.
