Also the more I listen to slapstick the more it sticks out to me how amazing it is. Like the structure and flow it is unreal. Initially it sounded like just a plain "verse, chorus verse , chorus" type song, but it's literally one of the most creative structured songs that still sounds catchy that I've heard in a while
I think this song really shows some serious song writing chops. it fucks with my head hard.. being a classically trained musician it is fun when conventional harmony is flipped on its head, makes you think outside the box and put other pieces together as to why it works. Once I got the chorus with just the piano it all made way more sense to me lol.
thanks! great and informative review, I didn't actually know the context about "Nearer My God to Thee" or that they actually sampled the hymn. that's made me love the album even more which I legitimately did not think possible
Does anyone have the official lyrics? I love this, but I have trouble with listening comprehension and I want to catch everything.
Really intrigued by the comments here. I picked up the album this morning and have just had a listen. I was excited, mainly due to the hype in this thread. To be honest, I struggled to connect with it and some of it I just didn't think much of. I think Dealer might have been more my style. But I will persevere and see how I feel as I listen to it over the next month or so.
Finished my first listen through and I'm really impressed. The album clicked immediately and the standouts for me on the first listen were "Trapped in Dillard's" and "Won't Drown". I've gotta say I'm a little disappointed to learn the chorus in Won't Drown wasn't "Probably going to drown, so you keep the water running on". That's all I heard for the first few listens on that song haha and I just liked it. I'm really interested to read all the lyrics on the songs.
I think Grand Paradise may have overtaken The Fox In Motion for my favourite chorus of the year. How the fuck did that happen?
Apple Music is the only place I’ve seen them. There were a couple errors throughout the album but seemed spot on for the large majority. Of course, none of this helps if you don’t have the service, but I’m sure people will be updating Genius soon with the lyrics, especially as records start arriving.
Really enjoying this so far! My only hesitation is that on first listen, some of the songs seem abit patchworky, but I imagine that after a few listens they will settle in for me. Lambert is excellent.
Those are the tracks that remind me most of the Smidley album from last year. Which I loved. Glad to see some stuff like that mixed in with the other new directions they took.
Favorites so far: Lich Prince Grand Paradise Won't Drown Lambert Really loving how dense this is. With a good pair of headphones it feels like I'm swimming in this album.
