I find both have a specific (but hard to define) air of crypticness & melancholy that I don't get from a lot of other bands in this space
This thread made me realize that I never got around to listening to DDTM despite loving Nearer my God. Just threw it on and it’s great!
Take no issue with folks saying something sounds like BN if they think it does, but without speaking for the thread what irked me was one person doing the “what about Bowie etc” shtick. But whatever…Foxing fuck yeah!
this feels like an overreaction to me saying "I don't recall a Brand New song that sounds like this" but ok lol
yeah, this. I don't care about Brand New. If you think it sounds like them and you like that, good stuff. Literally one person was like "I wish we could move past comparing these two bands" and that doesn't feel like an attack on anyone in here in any way to me lol
I do t think they always sound like BN but I started seeing that most commonly around Dealer. While Foxing has changed a bit over time there are definitely moments where they still do. But I also think the (musical) growth of BN will never be matched. Too many bands like to play it safe.
Wait Dealer is the album of theirs that sounds the least like BN to me? That album is very reserved and I don’t think BN ever exercised that type of restraint across a whole album. it does feel like it’s an “intangibles” type of comparison, like Foxing has “it” the same way BN did. It just feels like they’re always one step ahead, all their experimentation works out, masterfully executing soft/loud dynamics across songs/albums, and leaving an air of mystery and haze around it all. also Dealer is very underrated, gotta go listen now. Is Eiffel their most underrated song?
How is it a schtick? I’m genuinely curious about at what point it’s ok to hand wave away allegations like the “classic rock” guys, and be able to make comparisons to a sound without people raging that their name is even brought up.
What those guys did doesn't detract at all from Jesse Lacey did, so it doesn't matter. It's "whataboutism" at it's finest. It's also something that happened in recent history, compared to those guys where this stuff has always been lurking in the background if you looked into it. I also don't see tons of people on this site going to bat for the artists you are trying to compare. You can go praise BN on Reddit, they seem to have no problem with it.
No arguments from me that NMG is their (current) magnum opus, but when the vibes call for Dealer, there’s absolutely nothing that can beat it. Potentially my favorite late night album ever.
The "what about this guy from the 60s/70s" discussion is just so played out both online and in this forum specifically, we are not going to solve it here and it once again has nothing to do with Foxing. We literally have a whole thread for stuff like that if you really want to go down that path lol
Im not praising Brand New, it’s just dumb they get the Voldemort, he who shall not be named treatment on here any time someone mentions them.
There are a lot of people on this site that really loved Brand New and were very hurt when the allegations came out. I also think it's fine to mention them at this point, but that is the reason why anyone pushes back against it, imo.
I think 1. this is an exaggeration, most people can handle a mention of them (again, like one person said they wish we could stop comparing the two, which doesn't seem like an insane request) and 2. as pointed out above, I think that particular case left a pretty big scar on this community, so you may have more tolerance for discussing it than others. That's why I try to keep redirecting the conversation you're having to thread we have set up for these discussions and not the Foxing thread. It really isn't any deeper than this.
Im not doing this, I like foxing more than BN, Bowie or Nirvana and I want to talk about foxing in the foxing thread. You’re the only one raging far as I can tell (unless you’re not in which case no one is)
