why? Brand New was an amazing fucking band. Foxing is an amazing fucking band. Jesse's actions don't diminish the fact that they were the kings back in the day. David Bowie was doing way more fucked up shit and is still considered one of the greats and nobody ever says anything about that. Nirvana never gets dogged on and if youve ever read Kurts Journals, Holy Shit, he makes Jesse Lacey look like Mickey Mouse.
Anyways, this song is really good and I do agree that it works way better as a single than Speak for the Dead did, which is a song I love now but I wasn’t entirely sure about when it first dropped. Still, in hindsight, I think Speak for the Dead was a hilarious, extremely Foxing choice of first single.
Comparing Kurt Cobain's journals to things Jesse Lacey actually did is galaxy brain and not the direction this thread needs to take imo
The thing with Speak for the Dead was that it was released so far ahead of the album, and when it was released, we didn't even know if it was a single for the album or a standalone, then come to find out it was the closer, which was a bummer.
oh i thought you meant like the song wasnt good lol idc personally about hearing openers or closers but thats me
I thought I was going crazy and had the song title wrong for the past three years but I think you guys are just fake fans.
Comparing the things Kurt admitted to doing in the journal. It’s directly relevant to Jesse, except Kurt was sexually assaulting a mentally challenged girl. Just hate the fact that we can’t even bring up Brand New on this site without everyone getting flustered, when they’re the reason a lot of us even found AP. Their albums are undeniable classics even if Jesse sucks. I took an adderall this morning for the first time and I’m feeling extra talkative, sorry. I don’t want to derail the foxing talk because they deserve the praise so I’ll leave it there. Foxing rules guys.
I don’t personally have an issue with people comparing someone’s music to Brand New. Their influence is undeniable and it still persists - but you could have just ignored the original post instead of…*waves hand* !
This has long been debated as either embellished or completely made up, and regardless, has absolutely nothing to do with Foxing. I would take it to the Nirvana or Accountability in Music thread, this just isn't the place.
Personally, I think its fine to compare stuff to BN. I understand why people fight against it, those allegations had a huge affect on this community and really changed how a lot of people here interact with music, but bringing their music up as a touch point is not excusing Jesse's actions or supporting the band in any way. That being said, I think the BN comparison is a bit surface level. Foxing has a way more expansive sound than they ever did and in general, Brand New couldnt dream of writing a song like this.
Yeah, there are moments in their discography which come closest to touching the quality and tone of BN's golden age, but with a song like this, it simply doesn't make sense to compare the two anymore. They're on another level
Oh I’m fine with leaving it alone lol. Was just throwing some artists off the top of my head who were problematic but still well loved and don’t get the pain train brought down whenever they are brought up. “Damn man this song has some Bowie vibes.” “Hell yeah brother that rules” as compared to “Man this reminds of an old Brand New song” “Don’t bring those bastards up dude”
