Really enjoyed just shuffling their discography today. So many different styles and textures, all executed so well.
You could’ve given me 1000 guesses of what their discog would sound like post-Dealer, and I would have NEVER landed on NMG/DDTM and this one. It’s so rare for a band to go for a more subdued sound then rip the book up and go for a grand alt-rock/emo album, followed up by a more pop/electronic album then one that has more skramz influence than they’ve ever had. Truly incredible scope.
Given the pitchfork ratings of their prior albums, specifically NMG's 8.0, I inferred S/T was going to come close, but not exceed NMG. On the p4k curve, 7.8 is a badass for this "genre" of music.
Good point. I'd argue no one has done it this successfully with both fan and critical acclaim alike, since, well... Brand New. And I find their influence peppered throughout the album the more I listen to it.
I went into this album not hearing any of the singles so I had no idea what to expect. NMG is one of my favorite modern records and I was hooked and loved it on first listen. (I didn't care for DDTM at all). I put this on at 7am on a cool Saturday morning with my wife driving through the mountains, so the environment was quite the contrast to how loud and chaotic this is record is haha. This didn't immediately get my love, but after a few more spins with headphones in, I'm coming around on it. There is just way too much going on even after a handful of plays to form any sort of conclusion or opinion, which I appreciate, but there's just a small part of me that is a little sad it's not as immediate as NMG was.
I am also actually currently writing a rough draft of a review for this - I haven't published a review since 2021 for REDACTED
I really wish the Albatross songs would’ve been taken out of the set this tour especially since they just did the full album tour but ah well. Excited for the rest of the set!
Revisited The Albatross twice yesterday and I still think it's pretty good. I don't even listen to emo music anymore!
I think Cleaning is going to be a pretty regular skip for me. Listened last night and looked at my 12 year old cat and started crying. Cool song but a really tough one.
I have a different song stuck in my head every day, today it’s the heavy part of Dead Internet. Eric’s screams are a highlight for me throughout this album.
