I take it you didn’t like NMG? lol. To me this album is basically what would have happened if they got heavier and weirder after NMG, but oddly I also hear a lot of draw down the moon on the record from a harmonic perspective, not so much melody or arrangement (obviously),
Greyhound is such a monster track. I thought it was a weird choice of a first single when I heard it but it totally works in context here.
This definitely feels like two different albums split down the middle. Feel like the first half is so wildly different than the back half, but it still sonically works and connects if that makes sense lol
I remember thinking “man this thing is really hitting its stride on the back half” on my first listen
This is a wild album and I love it. I had a lot of driving and a lot of chores today and I listens to this like 5 times in a row. It kinda reminds me of Microwave’s Death is a Warm Blanket in that it’s a heavier, more nihilistic album after the band’s poppiest album.
This band is one of the best. They don’t miss. They’re successful at every sound they try. They’ve changed and evolved so much yet haven’t lost their identity through it all.
I actually love NMG. It’s not even how abrasive these songs are but the fact that I’m more so bored listening to this record. It legitimately felt like a slog to get through. I wish I heard more DDTM on this record as that’s my favorite of theirs. I hear some on Barking but that’s mostly it.
Im also team DDTM, thats a perfect record, but I liked this a lot. Even more on the second play through. I could see this ranking higher than NMG after I spend more time with it and read the lyrics. Some of the screaming was totally unintelligible for me the first round.
I love Greyhound but the first minute does sound like the music from one of those Jon Bois YouTube documentaries lol
Barking bass line is very Tame Impala, I love it. I’m in the camp of it not being very immediate, but I’m enjoying everything I’m hearing, and I haven’t been able to say that since Dealer. The singles are sticking out for me currently, and that usually means a record will grow on me with repeated listens. I also really liked Hall of Frozen Heads. I saw a review on Sput mention it like NMG without guardrails, and also compared it to MWY’s Untitled, and that one especially stuck with me, but more so because of the feeling of existential dread that underpins both albums.
Anyone struggling to get into it I'd highly recommend just to keep listening. I felt like that at first but I'm on my 7 or 8th full play through and this might be my record of the year now.
