I think I might be on the “this is a perfect album” train. It is growing exponentially with each listen.
Watching the livestream now, it’s very good. Also not sure this tops Nearer My God for me (that album was my second favorite release of 2018) but I’m liking it more each time I listen.
I'm at the point where I'm genuinely excited for every song because they are all the best song. I also feel the end of 737 could be a barrier to entry for some people. Like if I sent this to some of my friends who I think would love the album they might turn it off after the end of 737 and not give the rest a chance.
idk, leading into the catchiest song on the album acts as a serious counterbalance the sequencing on this thing alone makes it a stronger record than NMG imho
Yeah I agree and don't mind it personally. I'm just curious how some none foxing fans will react on a first listen. I'm already enjoying this significantly more than NMG. Grand Paradise is still the GOAT but otherwise I like everything else on this more.
I could see that as I literally just check this out for the first time yesterday. I need something catchy to pull me in and then i'm sold on new bands. Lightning definitely did that for me. I've sent it to a few friends to try to get them into it rather than just say 'Hey listen to this album'.
Yeah I think I’m leaning towards this being their best. NMG is an all timer for me, but I do feel like it kinda loses some steam in the second half. Even though I like all the songs individually, it kinda feels like a chore to get through, if that makes any sense. This one flows a LOT better, imo.
Loving this, that opener, and when "if i believed in love" kicks in, and then all of cold blooded are my highlights. My one (minor) criticism is that it seems most of the choruses are just kind of one repeated line sung in different ways? I've only listened front-to-back one time, so I could be wrong in my take. I was so blown away by the verse lyrics, that I felt myself disappointed by the lack of lyrics in the choruses. but the melodies, the vocal performances, the musicianship....absolutely incredible
I’m in the midst of my 4th or so listen and while I think it’s more consistent than NMG, I think the highs are definitely not as high. There are more hooks here, it’s super catchy, but NMG felt more experimental and my jaw dropped more.
just bought a ticket to watch the replay and snagged that blue/yellow vinyl they were selling on the same site. bout to press play lets gooooooo
Does anyone know how long the replay lasts? I want to watch it but can’t until later tonight. Seems unclear on the website.
NMG is one of my all time favorite albums. This is great so far and maybe in time it’ll will be up there too, but for now NMG is unmatched
I did a few of those songwriting workshops with Conor last summer and he actually talked about this. He wanted to make the verses on a lot of the songs more abstract and then find a single, almost thesis-like line for the choruses. He said he was very influenced by pop music in that regard.
Oh wow I just listened to 737 with the lyrics and realizes that the screaming part is references to all the other songs. Very cool. I could never understand what he was screaming before
