I'm out of the loop, why did they re-record the album?

 

Old label wouldn't let them press vinyl. Too much red tape

 

If it isn't I"ll be shocked.

I listened again and it sound more like Andrew to me now. Weird. I have never thought that they sounded that similar before.

 

Now I'm going to listen to CBK so thanks for that

I don't think I've listened to that album in like 10 years. Going to be fun to compare

 

This record sounds really good without the keys. Much heavier sounding

 

I went in to the re-recording very skeptical and was immediately worried when the opener sounded a bit different and rushed relative to the original, which is a pitch-perfect album opener. But as it went on (and I A-and-B'd the two records), I started really appreciating that we have the two mixes. The original is very balanced with a lot of high-end fizziness, but the low end is a bit thin sometimes. This mix is the opposite, with a lot more crunch and heft to the low-end that highlights how hard these songs can hit. You do get a bit of an uncanny valley feeling going back and forth between the mixes because they are so similar and overall, the new mix is a slight downgrade. But I definitely will have a hard time choosing which one to listen to whenever I want to spin the record.

It's dumb that they had to go this far to press vinyl, but I might pick up a copy. I used to have a pressing of the original and it did not sound great on the inner grooves so I sold it.

 

I don’t really listen to this band enough to prioritize a re-recording over my nostalgia when I actually am in the mood, BUT

I will say that I think they did a mostly great job with this. Really dig how the vocal delivery all over feels a lot more loose and reflective of what they sound like live. A few of the liberties taken I don’t care for at all, like those garbage telephone vocals around 2:05 in the title track. Also wish the little post-chorus guitar lead in Paul Revere wasn’t so cleaned up and low in the mix. But some I think are a huge improvement, moments like 2:44 in the title track, 2:43 in One Step At A Time, or 1:33 in Wasting Time where they added drums for more smooth, realistic transitions. I also enjoy hearing them use some tools they’ve learned along the way, like boosting the lead guitar in Body so it accentuates the vocal melody more — reminds me a lot of what they did with Crazy Pills. And lastly, it’s nice to hear this record without the keys lol. I’m long past accepting that they exist on the original recordings, but that was always my least favorite part of EOTY

 

I'm seeing these guys on Sunday and have been spinning this record a lot recently in anticipation.

Aside from This Body Pays the Bill$, the back half is really clicking for me in a way that it hasn't before. Paul Reveres Midnight Ride is such an ear worm it's not even funny.

Production is for sure weird and the song is pretty meh. Loved Brain Pain and would love them to follow that sound/production.

 

New song is cool but yeah Brain Pain rips. I honestly think it’s their best album. The production on it is A+

 

Easily their best album.Never really cared for them until the Brain Pain blew my mind

 

Go Down in History is what got me hooked.
