The multi-generational stuff hits me hard. When Alex said "Spaghetti Night?" to his mom I had a big smile on my face. This season and maybe next is definitely headed towards Ed's grandson vs Gordo's granddaughter.
Been rewatching the series. I think season 2 is my favorite. I just love the Gordo/Tracy plot, those are my two favorite characters in the whole show. The Poole peace mission plot in season 2 is also good.. Only damper on that season is the weird Danny/Karen stuff.
They're obviously pulling from Snowden and Wikileaks for 2010's stuff so far, but also they seem to be pulling from the current AI stuff and immigration stuff which makes me wonder what they'll do for the 2020's in season 6. I am making the very early prediction for season 6 that whatever microorganism life they find will trigger a Covid like pandemic
I thought this was the best episode as a whole so far this season. I'm excited they brought back you know who in the way they did. Also, Aleida totally recognized the lady in the picture. I wonder what that means for Mars and the mission.
Yeah I was wondering who it was Dev or Aleida or both. My theory is they're going to do a Dev's city isn't really for the people already living on Mars, but for Earth's richest people thing.
I think i see what they're setting up here Danny's daughter's moon marine unit is gonna be redirected to Mars to take it back from the rebels. Setting up the inevitable Ed's grandson vs Gordo's granddaughter confrontation.
I want Ellen Wilson back one last time, even just for a short scene. Her, Poole, and Margo are the only OG season 1 major NASA characters still alive in this show.
On second viewing the ending of season 4 is pretty lame. I don't like that the Poole getting shot thing didn't have any real point from what I can tell other than being a shocking moment that was undercut by her being ok and smiling 10 minutes later, it almost feels like they were gonna kill her off but changed their mind in reshoots. The big heroic climax of the season of them stealing the asteroid doesn't seem as impressive now knowing in season 5 it basically amounts to nothing.
I bet you they are going to do a "oh your surrogate grandma Danielle Poole is actually the one most responsible for your dad's death btw" shoedrop for this new Avery character when she gets to Mars.
Finished my series watchthrough now I think I am gonna try to finally finish Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy. One of the first observations I made about this show was how similar it was to Red Mars, especially more obvious as an inspiration with seasons 4 and 5. Ed Baldwin and Frank Chalmers are essentially the same character.
Just finished the 3 body problem books earlier this year. They’re very cool but the writing isn’t the best. Definitely recommend though.
It literally just occurred to me that this season is basically a The Killing reunion with Kinnaman and Unos.
Checked the show's subreddit and a surprising number of people in there echo @imthegrimace 's sentiment about his season. From what I see it looks like the more "futuristic sci-fi" this show has gotten since season 4 has alienated fans who who were pulled into it by the realistic NASA stuff of seasons 1-3. Also most people's favorite series characters are dead or barely in this.
I’m just not invested in any of the characters or storylines this season. Partially because it feels like this season has just been spinning its wheels.
I'm definitely less invested in the story this season. The new characters are starting to grow on me, though I can't shake the feeling that some of the Russia stuff is here to set up easter eggs / future stories for the Star City show. My biggest problem with the season so far though, which I also saw in some of the Reddit threads, is that so much of it has been small interior sets. Maybe they saved the budget for a big end-of-season set piece, and maybe it'll be really spectacular if that's what they did, but it does feel like a smaller/cheaper show now.
