Worth it.

Gah, I want rendang. And nasi goreng. and gado gado.

Fuckin' nasi goreng. If only people knew what their fried rice could be.

 

I want all of that. Not sure what it is. But it sounds good.

Rendang is slow braised beef with tons of spices, chili, and coconut milk.

Gado gado is a vegetable salad made of a bunch of southeast Asian green vegetables and things like corn, green beans, and potatoes. Oftentimes there is tofu or tempeh, which is like fermented soybean cake, shrimp crackers, these amazing rice cakes. All covered with spicy peanut sauce. Breakfast of champions.

Nasi goreng is Indonesia's version of fried rice. It's made with kecap manis (pronounced like ketchup which just means sauce) which is like a darker slightly sweeter and thicker soy sauce that makes the rice this really dark beautiful almost black color and the flavor is a lot deeper and kinda smoky? I dunno it's hard to explain. Maybe @St. Nate can explain it better.

 

Ketchup on mac and cheese? No. BBQ or hot sauce. Yes.

 

I dunno. Manis (sweet) is the only way to describe kecap manis. In texture I would say it's very syrupy too. Kinda like molasses. That texture is lost in the actual trice tho. Nasi goreng has a little extra kick with sembal olek, which is a spicy chili paste which tastes good just sautéed with onions. Sometimes it has additional chile depending.

 

Molasses! That's what I was trying to think of.

 

What is there to use instead of Yelp? I use it all the time to find new places to eat. It's not bad when you ignore the pretentious users/reviews.

 

Tripadvisor. 100% better. I think most people on Yelp don't know what the fuck they're talking about, tbh.

Zagat is an awesome resource too.

Avoid Thrillist at all costs.

Yea, TripAdvisor rules my town, if you have bad reviews your fracked.

 

To be fair, Yelp has been helpful for the most part.

I had breakfast in Los Angeles and San Francisco because of the restaurant's Yelp reviews (or rather the amount of stars) and both places were garbage.

 

I just use Yelp if I pass by a place I don't know to make sure they're at least decent versus word of mouth

 

Even when the line isn't bad, Dutch Bros takes a half hour. Why the fuck do I keep coming here.

 

i'd never heard of Dutch Bros so i looked it up because it sounded silly and do they actually just sell the tops of muffins? what do they do with the stumps, and have they been doing this since they opened, or just post '97??

 

Dutch Bros is iconic here. I will not hear any criticism except the over-friendliness of their employees. Let's not act like the tops of muffins aren't the most worthy part!

 

I don't know about their muffins. All I know is I tried their coffee once a couple years ago and now that's the only chain coffee joint I'll go to. Its delicious but goddamn the wait is absurd sometimes. Surely that comes back to being over-friendly.

 

I made a joke to the girl I'm talking to that we could go on a date to Dutch bros because of how long the wait time is. Everyone I know is a Dutch Bros fanatic.

 

The big sale at my work this week is 4 1 pound strawberry boxes for $5. The amount of people that ask if there is a catch for that price is hilarious.

I wanted to just mess with someone and be like "yeah you have to tell me a joke to get that price" but I feel like I'd be awful and make it awkward.

what would make you think a place that would choose a name as awful as Beef O'Brady's would be good?

 

The only beef o Brady's I've ever been to closed down in like 1999.
