double post but just had scallops, crab cake, jumbo shrimp, MD crab soup, and flounder. maryland rules.

 

Made a blueberry pie today, and tried my hand at a herringbone crust. Didn’t quite get the pattern right, and had some leakage issues during the bake so now I have some cleaning up to do on my pizza stone and in the oven

 

it’s that time in the thread where someone asks for knife set recs. i’m that someone. beginner/affordable preferably, but nice. many thanks in advance to a very good thread

Or, like, what would you want included in a set?

I'm a strong proponent on buying individual knives but I'm also terrible at money management.

 

you really only need 3 knives; chef's knife, pairing knife, and serrated/bread knife. The full knife sets are usually expensive and come with some knives you'll barely, if ever, use. Spend the majority on chef's knife as that will be the workhorse. Serrated knife you can go cheap on because they can't be sharpened so once they start to get dull you can just buy a new one.

I'm a fan of the brand Misen. They started out as a kickstarted company, but I've been happy with the quality of the chef's knife and couple pans I have from them. They're direct to consumer so it reduces the cost some.

Your chef's knife is going to be the most important and it's worth investing some money into a good one.

Also, you can drastically extend the life of your knife by getting proper sharpening stone.

 

It's hard, especially in the time of Covid, but, if at all possible, you wanna be able to hold your knife before you buy it. You want something comfortable in your hands.

 

Got an ice cream maker for quarantining, and successfully made my first custard based ice cream this past weekend. Fresh mint chocolate chunk. It was so good.

 

These are by an Italian company. I don’t know if you can get these in the US (they’re definitely available in certain supermarkets across Europe), but if so you should because they’re so good. I ate four of them today lolol

I’ve heard so many good things about misen. I may be losing my job at the end of the month so maybe I should splurge and buy some of their stuff now
