I think I quite literally shit once the entire week I was in Montreal because of all the cheese in my system from the Poutine lol
Y'know I always thought my mom's frosting in her black moons/whoopie pies was butter cream. But just learned from her it's a mix of butter, crisco, marshmallow fluff, confectioners sugar, and vanilla. And let me tell you. It's better than any frosting I've ever had and stays moist regardless of how long it has sat out. Idk what she does with the cake, but that also stays moist forever, too.
Tbh every whoopie pie I've ever had from a professional bakery has been shit and dried out. Idk what makes them so hard? But my mom was a pastry chef before she had us kids. I am an ignoramus when it comes to baking. I think I made Funfetti cupcakes once 15 years ago.
Just gonna copy-paste the descriptions from their menu. This was all very good. American Wagyu Coulotte Carpaccio w/ black garlic anchovy aioli, crispy onions, capers, and arugula. Slow Cooked Pork Coppa w/ five hour creamy polenta, pork jus, and pickled fennel. Olive Oil Cake w/ vanilla chantilly, orange poppy seed glaze, and orange segments
Did you go to La Banquise? probably THE spot and maybe it's touristy, but it was damn good in my opinion. It was INSANELY cold when I was there and I still didn't mind waiting 30-40 minutes to get it.
Can't tootally remember, it's been a few years, but it doesn't sound familiar. I think the best Poutine we had was in some bar in the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal that I remember having to walk into down stairs from the street. Also had some at some big sports bar chain in the main city. Hard to remember where else we went, if anything.
Side note, Bar Le Mal Nécessaire in Montreal's Chinatown was frigging amazing. Had flaming cocktails in hollowed out pineapples and it was just a really cool vibe in there
Two cooking firsts for me tonight: a burger (it feels weird that I've never actually made one??) and beer-battered onion rings - Two smashburgers with pepperjack cheese - Rehydrated minced onions - Grillos pickles - Shredded lettuce - Tomato - Burger sauce - Brioche bun + I did a lil copycat of Outback's bloomin onion sauce that is VERY close to the original. I loved this meal. My kitchen reeks.
I'm not usually big on pasta but decided to attempt making a bolognese tonight. I've never made pasta from scratch before, so it was a little on the thick side for my liking once it boiled. I might actually have to spring for a KitchenAid pasta attachment after all, ha ha. But overall...pretty good. Served alongside a salad with brined feta and red wine vinegar dressing.
I make basically that same salad every summer and it’s so good and easy and a perfect lunch for the week. The chickpeas and feta make it nice and filling!
I highly recommend grabbing an old school pasta machine, like this Marcato: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00170EB1Q/?tag=absolutepunk-20 It may require more work than the kitchenaid, but something about it tastes better (in my head).
Made a huge burrito with the last of my birria that I froze after Christmas. Spanish rice, fries, shredded lettuce, guacamole, and crema made with Trader Joe's Green Dragon hot sauce
Do it!!! I made quesabirria tacos; it was a good experience. I don't really like typical holiday fare (turkey/ham) and don't have any nuclear/local family to uphold that tradition with, so my partner and I agreed to just do what we wanted instead.
I love that. My wife and I had our own Christmas in 2024 and she made a pot roast. It was oddly kind of liberating
