Welp just finished this. Not a good record imo. The music itself isn't awful or anything just very bland until the closing track which is pretty jarring since its definitely from a different recording session with a completely different sound from the rest of the record. I much prefer that direction they were going with 'Today's Song' and 'Asking for a Friend' over whatever they were going for on the rest of this record.
Yeah listened, this is fine but will likely take up 1 setlist slot and then it'll be the usual 2011 and before set.
Sadly, I'm pretty unaffected by this. I like the mood of Child Actor, but it's so repetitive even by their standards. Window is so reminiscent of Subterranean too. Alas ...
On a huge MM kick lately (and this morning) because of the album announcement/new singles but will peep this later today. Wondering if I might like it more than the rest of you just because my expectations are so lowered at this point
I don't know if it's the infidelity/Grohl's handling of that whole situation, or if But Here We Are just felt to me like a good stopping point for this band, but I have had zero anticipation for this album throughout this entire rollout. First listen reaction is that it's OK, but just feels...perfunctory?
Liked this more than I thought I would have based on the singles....but yes lyrically at times.....not their best work to say the least
It just feels like a total step back from But Here We Are. Like, I saw some press release stuff say how this was a return to a rawer, garage band roots and it’s like, Foo Fighters were never a garage band, even when they recorded in a garage for Wasting Light. It just feels like them trying to be garage rock is recording nothing but first drafts and having the mix sound bad.
Only song that remotely stands out to me on first listen is Spit Shine, kind of a fun song. The rest of the record is desperately lacking hooks.
This is bilge so I threw the debut record on for the first time in ages and am having a much better time.
Feel like the self-titled album was in that vein. Even the singles I don't consider to be similar to the big post-grunge stadium rock they did afterwards.
Not top shelf Foos by any means, but I'll listen to this again. Probably in that Concrete, Celia, or Highways run for me that is just ... it's alright.
I feel like that was a little more of a mix of grunge, punk and shoegaze. Like, even though he considers them demos, there was definitely a coat of sheen on the recordings with the multitracked vocals and whatnot.
this is just a boring listen unfortunately. Nothing is clicking for me unlike the last which felt a little bit more inspiring.
I like this better than the run between Wasting Light and But Here We Are, but it definitely doesn't compare to the older stuff.
I think Concrete and Highways takes the cake for their worst, but this is definitely in that lower tier Foos album. Feels like they rushed it out in time so they could tour this summer. It’s fine, but the tracks that could warrant repeat listens to me are Of All People, Window and maybe Spit Shine. It’s just a by the numbers Foo album but missing that spark. Right now, I'd put it probably 10th in the rankings of their 12 albums for me. Medicine at Midnight is 9th but there's 3-4 tracks on that album that are repeaters for me and this doesn't seem to have that going for it. Of All People kicks ass as a standalone song though.
