I think the Foos are at their best when they're making heavy rock music. I certainly don't begrudge them experimenting but it doesn't always land for me.
I dunno hearing this made me instantly think of this b-side: Also gives me Mucky Fingers and Waiting for the Rapture vibes. All three of those Oasis songs are far superior to this Foos song, but that's where my mind went on first listen.
Idk, I'm listening to the single again and don't really get the hate - reminds me of "La Dee Da" with a touch of Medicine at Midnight. Don't really hear Black Keys at all lol even though I did describe it as garagey earlier. It's fun.
I was thinking this too, legacy band making a weird late-career pivot into garage rock revival with awful production. I don’t think the song itself is awful but the production… wooof.
I was just listening to that song for the first time in a long time earlier this week, and I agree. I liked that album more than most, and thought it threw some cool wrinkles into their well-worn sound.
La Dee Da is a song I really don't like on the album/recorded version, but live I don't mine it (which is good since they always play it every single show it seems)
I don't know if this is a controversial statement but I've honestly always gone to this band for the singles 90% of the time, the only albums that hit consistently from start to finish for me are TCATS and Wasting Light
Yeah, TINLTL is a pretty special record too. Pretty much their last before they went full arena rock.
"In Your Honor" was huge for me and my buds sophomore year of high school. Electric side feels like it still holds up well, opener really soars.
Almost been playing this and the Colour exclusively the past couple of weeks. Both are 9s for me. Trying to pinpoint what it is they lost for me after that - mostly their "warm" sound (unsure how else to put that), a lot of melody, sprinkling of humour kinda? Not hugely different to the albums that came after but the changes were enough to lose my interest beyond the singles.
New single doesn’t do much for me but will still check this out. The clips on the site sound promising
For me, they kind of faltered after “One By One” and really lost their consistency after “Wasting Light.” They kept on adding members when I think they really only need the core four. I’m glad Rami and Pat are cashing checks, but they don’t add much to the sound that they didn’t already have.
I'm curious to know what everyone's idea of the classic Foo lineup is. I preferred their four man piece of Dave, Nate, Chris, and Taylor. The six man band makes it feel kinda bloated or something. I dunno. I had a live DVD from the One By One era I used to watch the shit out of and it was perfect. I get Pat is a cool dude and he was part of their best album, but Chris brings more to the table as a lead guitarist. Anyways, my album rankings look like this: 1. Colour And The Shape 2. There Is Nothing Left To Lose 3. Wasting Light 4. Foo Fighters 5. One By One 6. But Here We Are 7. Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace 8. Medicine At Midnight 9. In Your Honor 10. Concrete & Gold 11. Sonic Highways
