We had fun, probs my 2nd fav Foo album.

EDIT: And a clip of a new song by my band, which you will all be tired of hearing about by June of this year hehe

I’m still reading but this whole story is strange. They have several sources (multiple of them going on record by name, including Matt Cameron) adamantly saying Taylor wanted a major change in his status in the band and had a “heart-to-heart” with Dave about it… and the band’s representative is straight up saying that conversation never happened?

I find it hard to believe all the people they quoted would make something like that up… they have no motive for doing so. The whole thing is messy and it’s sad to see.

damn. this is brutal. also extremely weird if dave was essentially forcing taylor into performing when he didn’t want to?

I would think the truth is somewhere in between. This kind of seems like rolling stone was just itching to get a story out though tbh. Neither his bandmates or family spoke to them, and I would think those would be the most reliable and trustworthy sources. I know Matt and Chad are good friends, but still.

again, chad smith and matt cameron are notable figures choosing to go by name that would stand to lose a lot by lying/stretching the truth with this. no reason to not believe them vs. band members who probably don't want to be viewed as "responsible" for his death

Tough article but I would have to say that the FF management probably has to deny everything they denied for legal purposes

Yeah, I don’t see Cameron or Smith having any reason to lie (and this puts to bed any thoughts about Cameron taking over for Taylor if FF continues). There is something a little sleazy about how this whole thing is presented so close to Taylor’s death. Like, I’m not sure we really needed to know this now unless the family wanted that to be out there.

I never meant to suggest that they are lying at all. I just think perspectives can be much different depending on who you ask. And I’m willing to bet that the closest people to Taylor are those that did not actually agree to speak with Rolling Stone.

Like, it’s a fault of my own, but I can totally see myself venting to one friend about someone or something else in my life, but then when it’s time to confront that person/thing I’m talking about, I completely downplay it, mostly to avoid drama in my case.

100% believing the people who put their names against what they're saying vs. a band "representative". It is strange how the Foos kept up the same level of touring in their 50's as their late 20's as the article seems to indicate.

  15. I was exhausted after seeing them play for 3 hours and I’m not even in the band haha. I totally get why someone (especially the drummer) wouldn’t feel physically capable to play 3 hours a night/100+ shows a year. That must be absolutely brutal when you’re in your 50s. I just really hope Dave isn’t putting all the blame on himself, thinking he pushed Taylor to get back on drugs or anything. That would be an impossible weight to carry, especially with it being Taylor. It’s all very shitty and I’m still in shock that he’s gone.

  16. Definitely feels opportunistic and more than a little gross to me, but maybe I'm sensitive.

Like, if the family didn't want to comment, why feel the need to broadcast it? And if it was something the public really needed to know, why put it behind a paywall? Idk.

piece is very much trying to work an angle, which very much has its place in journalism—you would want to constantly refer to a party's non-answers in a story about their corruption, for instance—but always feels gross when it's about something like this, especially when we still don't know why he died and may never

    one great thing about the piece is both chad and matt just talking about how much they loved this guy. ;_;

i will say that as a drummer who is in nowhere near the excellent shape hawkins was in, their touring schedule would've destroyed my body. cameron makes the allusion to running a marathon every night, and i would liken it to like... wrestling every night. just taking bumps for three hours and having to do it again the next day. you'll injure yourself a lot and it becomes impossible to recover

  20. I’ve been trying to get back into “drumming” shape just playing to headphones like an hour or two a few days a week and I get sore as fuck lol. Can’t even begin to imagine playing foo fighters songs for 3 hours a night 50-100 times a year.

The more I think about it, the worse the story feels in the sense that everyone is still grieving and this really points the finger at Dave and more or less blames him for his best friend dying when, as unbornwhiskey said, we don’t know the cause of death and there could be a number of contributing factors, from the physical toll of touring to Taylor’s health.

It just feels like it wants to paint the picture of Dave being this workhorse that forced the band to do all of this relentless touring. Maybe that’s true. But with the band rightfully not talking and not able to defend themselves, it feels irresponsible at this moment.

I only made it about halfway through the article but yeah, I'm torn. I can see how some of the notable quotes could be misrepresented (me to friend: "my spouse is being a huge pain in the ass today." friend to media: "he used to tell me how much of a pain in the ass his spouse always was." not completely the same?). but the article definitely felt... misplaced? I don't know. The touring regime is a massively valid point, but without Taylor being here or his family able to back up specifics of those claims, it's a little daunting to try and figure out where the truth in there actually is.

all in all, this still just breaks my heart. and it also felt like a shitty way to bring this back up into the news. like are you making this news just to MAKE news? or is there something noteworthy there, like a cause of death (nope) that this would support, shed light on.

Man, that's sleazy. As a journalist, I'm used to taking the writer's side when a celebrity slips up and blames them. But this really seems like they got access to Cameron under the guise of a tribute to Hawkins and ran with the more pot-stirring quotes so they could craft a narrative beyond that (that no one needed). I wonder if he gave them those quotes on background and they decided that was the story.
