one drummer to another, im right there with you. Dave's book was amazing. If you get a chance, it's worth listening to the audio book where he narrates it all. Plus there's a bonus "chapter" story not included in the print version. no doubt the entire band is gutted, but the way that Dave talks about Taylor... he must feel like a part of his soul has been torn out.
there are some preliminary reports out of Columbia that it was altitude sickness, but it seems like a stretch. No evidence to back up the statement, but I'm just pointing out what has been circulating in the news down there. **edit: I want to be clear that while altitude sickness is a serious possibility, the article does not cite any official or medical expertise when asserting the possible cause** FTA (via google translate): A witness who was in the hotel where the drummer was staying told SEMANA the moments that were lived in the place. The man pointed out that around 7:40 at night the paramedics arrived to attend to a person. He stated that at that time he thought that the reason would have been a decompensation due to the altitude of Bogotá. “The paramedics arrived, they arrived in an informal car. They entered through the parking lot. We thought that (the members of Foo Fighters) were going to go to the show there in Briceño. It was already 7:40 at night. We thought it was altitude sickness,” he said. https://www.semana.com/nacion/artic...erista-de-foo-fighters-taylor-hawkins/202201/
absolutely fucked never been massively into this band but as a drummer myself I know talent when I see it and Taylor had it in spades. RIP.
Had to google Bogota's elevation... had no idea it was that high up. "Bogotá sits at 8,660 feet above sea level. As a reference point, Denver sits at 5,280 feet, or 1 mile above sea level and a LOT of people experience altitude sickness when visiting there."
So sad to hear. Unimaginable loss for his family, friends and music community. Taylor always seemed like he was such a down to earth fun guy in interviews and on stage. As musicians, these guys have had to unfortunately to deal with so much loss and tragedy in losing former band mates like Kurt Cobain, Tony Sly, and Darby Crash.
Yeah I hope I didnt completely come across as wholesale discounting that theory because it's definitely a possibility. The article made it seem like random conjecture from a few people who were on site, but not from any official source.
Fucking shocking. It doesn't even feel real. I was FINALLY going to see them live after years and years of trying to but it always falling through and now this happens. I can't believe it. What an absolute tragedy, he was an incredible drummer and he seemed like such an amazingly cool and happy guy, he didn't deserve this shit. Like others said this hits even harder after reading Dave's book too, he's going to be inconsolable. What a fucking horrible situation RIP to a legend
You all said it so much better.... I'm so heartbroken over this - just way too young. Cannot imagine what His family, and the guys in the Foos are going through .... they all just seemed like one big happy family for the last 10ish years since expanding to a 6 piece. Taylor thank you for the music and the memories.... seeing them live 5 times suddenly seems like not nearly enough.
Goddamn, awful news to wake up to. Just so shocked. All the love in the world to the band and to his family.
I just woke up and saw the news. My heart hurts just thinking about it and I was in denial when I first saw a tweet about it. I can’t begin to image how devastating this is for his family and the rest of the band.
Dave saying “last time” towards the end of the song wrecked me into oblivion. this doesn’t feel real. I’m so so heartbroken.
Really sad. 50 is so young. I've read back the last few pages and it doesn't change what happened but there's a lot of great memories that all of you have from this man. He led a life with purpose that touched and inspired many, and that's important to appreciate in this sadness.
Unbelievable. He was so talented and brought this band to life just as much as Dave or any other member. It won't be the same without him. Heartbroken for his family and the band. Just devastating news. He seems like such a kind soul.
Spinning their discography this morning and I just want to say Wheels is a perfect rock song. Perfect. RIP Taylor.
