Sadly there would be about 5 people at each show if they played that album. Band fell off hard after Gospel. I saw the farewell tour and there couldn’t have been more than 50-75 people at my show.
Insane take because OCL is their magnum opus - I drove 14 hours round trip, during the week, to see their last show at ace of cups in Columbus Ohio before the hiatus
The most depressing thing was going to one of their shows and being probably 1 of 3 people singing along to the Oh Common Life songs people don’t know what they’re missing out on
I saw them at Gilman St the night before this one at we got nearly this exact setlist with 5 each from OCL and Gospel plus the title track and it was great. Saw them again for this after they returned and it was mostly HLP songs and a lot less people there. Hopefully this'll be more than just a Michigan show and there's a handful of other songs in addition to Gospel.
Also - next year would be a 20 year anniversary for Set Your Goals’ Mutiny as well. Let’s steal Baloni from TWY’s merch table and really turn back the clock.
I wasn’t taking a shot at OCL, I really enjoy the album. I was moreso talking about how their fanbase largely didn’t care for it regardless of the quality of the music.
you did say they "fell off hard" but reading that in context with your other posts I think you meant the fanbase did. I think that "pop punk revival" was just hitting its peak when Gospel, Suburbia, Under Soil and Dirt, Listen and Forgive, and Radiosurgery (wtf 2011 still blows my mind) came out, then by the time 2014 came around, most casual fans moved on pretty quick, at least I did. I still had a soft spot for Fireworks, but I was more interested in Balance and Composure, Tigers Jaw, Citizen, Title Fight, Touche Amore, La Dispute, Pianos Become the Teeth, and other alt-revival Yipcore bands at the time.
Oh Common Life is really good yeah, and don't see it as a massive leap from the sound of Gospel either, just a bit more mature
I’m not sure how you can listen to One More Creature Dizzy With Love and not think it’s a massive leap
It’s a post rock disguised as a pop punk song, it’s so good. The three guitars in the instrumental bridge are just *chefs kiss*
Gospel and Oh Common Life are both brilliant, but in such different ways. That said, I unequivocally prefer OCL. It's like their self titled and Gospel is their TOYPAJ.
i still prefer gospel overall, but run brother run is a really important song to me personally. also i love this performance of it (and I used this as my tutorial to learn it on guitar!)
I like Gospel a lot, but don’t really revisit it as much as everything else. OCL vs HLP is a tough match up, but if I get to count demitasse, it might be the tiebreaker. That song is like an all-timer for me.
I’m not particularly interested in a Gospel tour, but it will give me a good reason to revisit those songs.
Run Brother Run, One More Creature Dizzy With Love, and Woods are pretty much head and shoulders above the rest of Gospel, but if I'm nitpicking it probably isn't quite as consistent across the board. I'm slightly worried about a Gospel tour, and I mean this as kindly as I can say it, but I think Dave's voice would have an issue holding up over the course of a few shows of majority that album, much less a whole tour. Unless he's a drastically different performer than he was back in the day.
got tix for chicago, very excited haven't seen them since the record release show for "all i have to offer..." at the beat kitchen before they hopped on the nfg tour way back when
Scooped a Chicago ticket, hell yeah. This record means so damn much to me. And they shared on their story it's a no-barricade show, let's fucking dance
