I will say, Chris might’ve written a lot of the lyrics here. He did most of them on Gospel, and Dave did a couple songs on OCL. Not sure what the split was here. From what I can tell, I think Dave also does more guitar/songwriting than you would expect as well.
The more I listen the more Modest Mouse and stuff like Cage the Elephant I hear. Those sort of weird avant garde indie rock bands.
I hear "Cry Me a River" in the end part of "Jerking Off the Sky." You don't have to say What you did I already know I found out from him. I'm being serious, by the way.
Listened a few more times and concluded this isn’t for me. Keep waiting for it to click but just not happening.
This album is great. So happy they're back :) Definitely hearing hints of Republic of Wolves in some of these songs aswell.
That's what makes it so great. I'll never understand why some people prefer a homogenized album experience.
Finally put my finger on it. Veins in David's Hand sounds like a Russian Girlfriends vocal delivery, especially the 2nd verse around 1:40 till the end of the song. If you've never heard of them, check out 'In the Parlance of Our Times'.
I never said it wasn't great or was, all I said was it was out of place and the poster I quoted disagreed with me. I think it's undeniably out of place musically with the rest of the album. For reference, I like the song - I think it's good and it's an interesting opener. I'm just more interested in the reasoning behind it rather than making a complaint that it makes the album lack uniformity because of it.
I like it as an opener the same way I like El Paso as an opener to TBS's self-titled. It's just kinda jarring and only tangentially sounds like the rest of their stuff and yet somehow sets up the rest of the album. I can see why the jarring-ness (?) of it is a turn off but I've been digging it so far!
I like this album a lot more with Demitasse swapped in for Jerking and Machines, works as a nice centrepiece and I'm not keen on those two tracks, (nor Estate particularly). The rest I like!
I love both but can understand why they could both be dropped for Demitasse if you don’t like them and like Demitasse.
