what a magnificent statement of a record. This thing is already so, so special. I knew Fireworks were capable of a lot but tbh this has to be the most insane progression of a sound from any band from the early '10s scene, except maybe Turnover?
They really made an album that hits the feeling of being in your 30’s and just being blindsided with life. Truly remarkable stuff.
this is such a dark record and it is so goddamn good. it's also so unreal to me that i last saw them in 2014 and the progression from oh common life to THIS? mindblowing.
this is actually less radical a switch-up than I was expecting given "demitasse" but I'm not gonna complain cause it's probably better than every new emo album I heard last year (and I heard a lot!)
yeah this definitely wasnt as different as i thought, feels like a very reasonable followup to ocl. could see this becoming my favorite of theirs
I don't think I've listened to Oh, Common Life since it came out so when I put this on, I was relying on my memories of their work up until Gospel, which makes this quite the change. The opener, the insane "Jerking Off The Sky" - "The Machines Kept You Alive" - "Blood In The Milk" run and the closer are immediate favorites. I love the increased use of synths and strings, as well as the post-punk revival undertones that pop up here and there.
Yeah I feel like the experimental songs like Machines Kept You Alive and the production is really what sets it apart. Some of the catchier songs with OCL’s production wouldn’t be all that different.
love it so so much when the short song at the start of an album turns out to be an out of character shitripper and not some boring intro thing
Amazing album on first listen. Every song is essential. Being 33 and getting this album is such a treat.
This album sounds like squeezing into a 10 year old band tee after you’ve gained 30 pounds while wondering if your boring job is worth it even though it pays the bills.
I think demitasse fits well just right on the end. Easy is a good closer, but really like demitasse there
This all feels unreal. This is exactly what I needed. Killer production. Can't wait to dig more into the lyrics.
Pretty impressed with the songwriting here. Ocl was a really big step forward lyrically and a lot of this follows suit
Wasn’t overly feeling God Approved Insurance Plan on first listen but then I Want to Start A Religion With You is instantly doing some shit for me. Then now Goodnight Tomb. Oh man. This is going to a be a treat.
