Not that I know of. It has its own save files and "side story" button on the main menu.

Yeah do I have to start a new file for them? Because I'm like 15 hours into my current run with the GD

 

basing from the responses in this thread the new story is a completely new experience (with a different save file) so it won’t mess with your current one.

 

That is correct! It doesn't affect your current game and it has a locked cast, so there's no recruiting or anything while you're in Abyss.

Then once you've completed it, the Abyss area is available to visit and all four of the Ashen Wolves are available to recruit.

I'm on my first play through (Golden Deer) and I think I'm halfway-ish. I'm having a dilemma w/ Byleth (stuck at Mercenary) since I feel like the game prioritizes upgrading others' skills over his. Swordsman is prob the easiest, but I think I'm going to try for Hero, even though I need to get his axe up to like C from D right now.

 

I've yet to use a Hero in any of my runs but I think I'm gonna try to make Ignatz one for the lolz

 

Ooh I made Ignatz a sniper, and man is he dirty. Love when I get him on a ballista
