I'm not going to argue behind a band that's crossed between Glassjaw and the Used cause frankly that sounds awesome.
I mean... I think their first album sounds like Glassjaw/The Used too, but more like The Used's first album. I never liked The Used's albums after their first one. Actually, SHTS reminds me more of the third Used album, which is worse than their second one. But whatever. I'm interested to see what the countdown is for.
I'm seriously not following WIITB sounding anything like Glassjaw, but I am following that for SHTS. I'm a big fan of Lies for the Liars (3rd Used album) so again, not having a problem with these comparisons. Plus, SHTS came out way before that one. You don't like it, that's cool. You're not alone in that. For me, vocally and instrumentally I just love how it bounces all over the place and that was a way that a lot of good music was going cause pop punk was getting boring. Gatsbys, Say Anything, Northstar, Starting Line, Midtown, Brand New were the types of bands contributing to this experimentation in different ways. Finch just did it too early imo.
Man, I’m hoping and praying for a new song. A countdown for roughly two days would fit that Thursday/Fridayish release window too.
I’m like 90% certain it’s new music. They’ve been recording with Grizz on and off for a few years now so they definitely have material in the can by now I’m sure.
Would also love to have their "unreleased" albums officially posted somewhere, maybe even remixed/remastered? I'm sure someone has those files, and it would be a cool way to build momentum into an actual new release.
say hello knocked me on my ass when it released. I think it came out the same day as a motion city soundtrack album and i remember trying to switch straight from say hello to that. And nope.
With Grizz doing production, I don’t think it would be too hard to have them get the songs properly recorded/released, but I’m sure the guys are probably over a lot of the material (World of Violence era especially) so I don’t see it happening sadly. I think it’s a no brainer since they could easily do a Kickstarter to self release those albums and then release a proper new record.
I remember when half of Say Hello To Sunshine leaked on KaZaa like… maybe 8 months before it officially came out? This was definitely 2004 (what a time) and I was stunned at the change in sound but immediately obsessed. I played Revelation Song and Brother Bleed Brother off my virus-infected PC nonstop. Once they announced the pre-order, I ordered the combo shirt+CD since I was still loving the record and wanted to show support after downloading a leak lol
Damn, I remember that too! I think “Brother Bleed Brother” was the first song to drop and I was like, “Who IS this?!” Then the whole thing leaked and I was completely caught off guard and blown away. Now that I am older, I think their sweet spot is probably a combination of WIITB and SHTS. I am irrationally hoping we get a polished version of “Monuments” in the next few days as a lead single for an upcoming album. My hype would be inarticulable. Plus, a twenty year anniversary tour for SHTS is still a year off (God, we’re old!).
I remember having chills listening to Ink for the first time. So good but I understand how it was jarring for some fans. I think people don’t consider that Finch by 2005 had to kind of reinvent themselves in a way. The sound they got big on was starting to get stale and if they released a Burn pt. II - I don’t think it would have gone over as well as it may seem. At least, that’s my view on it. Maybe if they did a quick turnaround by late 2003 with a new record then sure a Burn 2 is fine but otherwise? I think a change was going to be needed either way. Tbh I’m not a big fan of Monuments or Burning Bridges - they’re fine songs for sure - but a track like Black Mass is the perfect mix of old/new that would excite me personally. Regardless, I’m HYPED to see what tomorrow brings.
The change being really a bad album was the problem. A proper follow up keeping what made WIITB awesome in 2005 coulda been a monster. We're still a full year out from Saosin's debut being huge in 2006. Rise Against, Thursday, My Chem, Thrice, all on the rise.
You’ve got a point about Saosin for sure but even Thrice/Thursday was changing their sound by 2005/2006 with Vheissu and Light (both awesome records) and I would argue that My Chem and Rise Against are a little different in what they’re bringing to the table sound wise. I also completely disagree about SHTS being a bad record since it’s my favorite and has aged very well IMO ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
