Pretty sure SHTS was really polarizing when it came out, so that can hold some water - I'm wondering how different their career could have been if they had released it as a 3rd or 4th album
I guess maybe they assumed “Worms of the Earth” was enough to prepare fans for a shift in their sound but it sadly wasn’t
Back to Oblivion has some fantastic songs on it - Play Dead and Inferium come to mind immediately. They've gotta be so tired of playing WIITB, I'd love them to just announce a tour playing songs from everything (but also new music, of course)
World wasn't ready for SHTS. They really needed an album in between that carried the old sound into the new sound. The first time I heard SHTS I was listening with my roommate and we were like what the hell is this nu-metal shit. It'd go on to be one of my favorite albums after really diving in, and I still come back to it, but it was just so far from WIITB. The other album I sampled and just seemed boring, for the purpose of doing another tour hopefully they can channel back to a sound that merges their styles.
I didn’t even give that album a chance really, which was unfair of me. I wanted Burn part 2, and it wasn’t that, so I pretty much immediately disregarded it.
It's easy when a band puts out a scene defining, genre bending, all killer no filler album then follow it up a steaming pile
I’m also in the ‘I wanted WIITB part 2’ camp over SHTS. I just couldn’t get into that record. I might have to spin it again to see if anything has changed.
I actually took my SHTS cd for my commute just yesterday, and it's still very good, seems they really didn't want to play almost anything straight and simple. Definitely for a different fanbase, if you're into both of those worlds, than it's just luck. I don't want to get into the debacle which is was better, cause I loved WIITB too. They do have some similarities and that's why I liked some of the songs on Say Hello right away, and then started enjoying the rest after I got used to the stuff closer to The Sound of Animals Fighting
It’s always interesting when a band hits it big, and then they go the other way for their follow up. They basically set themselves up for backlash and then never really recover. The Ataris SLA to WTN is in that same category.
Honestly I really loved both records for different reasons when they came out. WIITB is probably my favorite now, but I do still really appreciate SHTS.
