Listened to both again just now... Weezer is fun, a great album, but man is Futures so damn good. It came out in such an impactful time of my life, too, that I just love putting it on and thinking back to those young and relatively care free days of my youth.

I definitely like everything in the Clarity to Chase This Light run more than the Blue Album. Beyond that, not sure, though I probably do play, like, Invented and Integrity Blues more than any Weezer album. I just tend to be in a Jimmy Eat World mood more than I'm in a Weezer mood.

 

Blue had heart, but Futures had football in the groin

 

17-21 years into Weezer's dumbed down era, I no longer begrudge them for the ways their sound changed post Matt Sharp. I like a ton of the material from green through 2022 and love a fair amount of it. I even like fucking Magic by BOB and I can get why they leaned into the Africa cover as hard as they did. Van Weezer sits comfortably in the upper half of their catalog for me and is an honorable mention on the albums of 2021 I enjoyed most list.

But I also wonder if 2000s Weezer apologism and 2020s Weezer hate alike have somehow combined to give rise to the idea that they only ever just good and weren't actually exceptional in the first place. Maybe I'm just inventing a guy (the blue album is in the chorus.fm final 4 and people here have somehow convinced themselves SZNZ isn't trash, after all!). But I digress.

The blue album is a perfect album in my book on a few fronts. Every song is great. It functions as both a great 90s pop rock record and a great indie rock (or alternative if that's more era appropriate) record. It has, imo, some of the greatest guitar tones ever recorded. And as much as it's built around hooks and singalong choruses, it has that subtle undercurrent of darkness thing that can elevate good pop music to great. (Even more obvious on the demo version which I will never miss an opportunity to post):

Anyways, there are plenty of albums that are bigger swings. Two are in the other matchup. Jimmy Eat World might have even made one themselves! But the blue album fucking rules as hard as any album ever, the end.

 

Never heard the Weezer album before but I voted for Futures. Album slaps.

 

It seems like some people are just voting on band they like and not the album. I like Jimmy far more than I like Weezer as a whole, and while Jimmy may have made an album as good as Blue, Futures isn't it by a mile.

 

This same Weezer album beat Clarity two weeks ago.
