I'm glad Iran are going home. Hated how they acted through that match.

 

Lots of drama last night - I loved it! I feel like the inconsistent use of VAR and then the pressure on referees when they are told that they have 'made a mistake' means that it isn't quite working in a fair and balanced way. That was never a penalty for Iran and Portugal can rightly feel aggrieved. Facing Uruguay instead of Russia is a big difference.

I thought both Spain and Portugal looked very poor last night. I'd love Russia to upset Spain. I felt the Spanish were playing with no conviction or urgency. Pique was lucky to stay on the pitch after his two footed, off the floor lunge. Their defending was hilarious for the opening goal. Glad Morocco got a point as you could make a case that they were the better side against Iran and Portugal - shame they didn't get all three!

Just who is going to win this World Cup?!

Looking forward to more drama tonight in group D. Group C looks more simple but you never know!

 

Agree with this although I felt Portugal were doing similar things. Everyone was overreacting and play acting.

Everyone thought that using video would help eradicate that but it seems with those kind of more physical teams it may end up making it worse. Portugal vs Uruguay will be interesting for that reason - both defensive, both physical, both have some particular characters!

 

Yeah I probably would have said the same but subbed Portugal in for Iran if Iran won.

If an iranian player had elbowed Ronaldo in the face it would’ve been a straight red. Curious why he only got a yellow...

 

I'm interested as to how the referee justifies that. Like, what foul has he determined that to be?

 

I thought it was a red from the first angle, second angle shows he doesn't make contact with the face.

 

Neither did Sergi in the clasico but it was still a red. Like swinging at the face is an instant red, yeah?

 

Was there a swing though? Looked like he was using his arm to get around and push him. I can see why the ref would say no red card.

 

I've watched it so many times and I think a yellow is the fair result. Agree with @Nick that it looks to me that he's just trying to get by. It's not clear and obvious that he has deliberately taken a swing at him.

Would have been happy if he'd been sent off though as I don't like him and would have found that very funny.

 

As I said, from the one angle it looks like a definite intentional elbow. But there's a second angle that was actually the last angle the ref looked after before making his decision that makes it look completely different. I can't for the life of me find it now as people are only focusing on the first angle that looks a definite elbow.

 

God damn did the bar here in Barcelona set off during the games last night haha.

Cheering 0n Argentina cause a waiter was talking to me during the Germany - Sweden game and he was Argentine and was really sad. He was serving a table of 7 Croatians during their game and apparently they were merciless!
