For against a team like Mexico I mean. Hummels is way too slow and getting lost moving up into midfield, where he needs to go because Khedira isn't sitting back. Kroos doesn't seem to be working with Khedira beside him. He would need someone similar in positioning to Casemiro. The two man midfield here is getting bypassed easily and with Hummels stepping up its leaving a lot of space that Boateng can't cover. Surely putting in a three man midfield and a faster centre back would be better.

Isn't Boateng coming off an injury ridden season?

Yes, Boateng was plagued with injuries the last 2 years. Which explains why he isnt world class like he used to be.
