Man what a day for news, Spain sack their manager and the US bid wins. And holy shit I can't believe the WC starts tomorrow. Wish the US was playing but in reality it doesn't damper my excitement at all. Kinda tired of Germany/Brazil so I'm pulling for Belgium, England, and of course Iceland.

Personally I think you should all become England fans. There is nothing like it.

    1) The tournament approaches and it's mostly pessimism, but with a slight undercurrent of totally unwarranted optimism based off a few individual players and complete insanity.

    2) We play unconvincingly but win a few games against some no-hopers and everyone goes crazy and thinks "IT'S BLOODY COMIN' HOME LADS".

    3) We lose to Belgium 2-1, but we still progress, and the press shout at all the players and someone is made a scapegoat.

    4) We win in the Ro16 against Poland and everyone goes fully nuts, acting like Harry Kane is Jesus.

    5) We get thumped 5-1 by Brazil in a "brave" performance where some inconsequential mistake by a referee when we are 4-1 down is attributed as the main reason for the loss

    6) The dust settles and we hound him online until he fears for his life and has to move address.

    Honestly, it's all good fun.

    It's depressingly good fun.

But in all seriousness, I like that there is way less pressure on the team this time. I know that'll probably change come Monday but it feels refreshing currently.

I was trying to describe myself to someone

I'd like to see us go out and thump the two minnows and then take a hard fought victory from Belgium. I've never actually witnessed us play well in the group stage. If we did that, I could see us confidently striding into the QF and then getting schooled by either Brazil or Germany (I think that's our likely opponents if we make it that far).

Sadly, I think we're more likely to completely fail to break down Tunisia or Panama, who will be parking the bus and looking to get us on a break. We'll probably then play well against Belgium, but lose. Knowing our luck, Tunisia will manage to take second with 5 points and we'll be going home early.

Or it pans out pretty much exactly as you said. Is anyone offering odds on Dele being our new hate figure?

Could see Dele Alli doing a Dele Alli and giving someone a smack and getting sent off.

The question is, will the backlash be larger than Beckham 98 or not.

I probably would have gone to Morocco 26, circumstances withstanding. But I don't see myself going to a NA world cup. The travelling counts me out.

  13. Chelsea and Spurs battling for Jack Grealish is a weird one.

Nothing could be that bad. People burnt effigies of Beckham. He was an actual hate figure.

I am considering it already. I could tie it in to a holiday, attending a game at maybe one of the less mega-touristy destinations as I hope to have visited them all by then anyway. Maybe I'll go Philly or something.

I hate driving across Ireland and it takes like 3 hours to get to the other side of the country. America would be insane.

3 hours gets me almost to the next major city in Texas, haha.

There was an article a few years back that showed Texas could logistically host a World Cup on its own. We have enough NFL and College Football stadiums to comfortably do it haha. Just absurd.

By “great American road trip” I mean “flying is cool”

PayPal to the winner/Runner-up at the end.

Feel like Texas, Florida, and California could all do this. That’d be fun.

  24. I ultimately decided on the red England jersey. Just ordered it.
