I knewwwwwww it. Now you can join us in bumping the Hats thread whenever you think of it! Highly recommend this piece, I read it every six months or so: The Blue Nile's 'Hats' Turns 30: Revisiting A Cult Classic
fwiw, the bends isn’t at all what radiohead is haha. love that record though! excited for your journey, they’re my favorite band
One of the “problems” with this exercise is that when you hear something really brilliant, it ends up dominating your listening in February. I’ve been listening to “The Creator Has a Master Plan” by Pharaoh Sanders pretty much every day since I heard it a week or so ago, which impacts how much time I can spend to get to other new records. That’s absolutely a good thing, because I adore that record now, but I definitely have slipped behind my list.
@Craig Manning you should check out the Young Veins record if you like that Panic one. it's full on power pop and a side project band. byrds worship basically.
When you listen to Solomon Burke and then find out Mick Jagger was a huge fan you can pick up on the influence, which is fun. And you inspired me to throw on “Hold On, I’m Coming” and god if that’s not just one of the best songs of all time. (If you think the cover is goofy, don’t look up the origin of how Isaac Hayes came up with the song. Haha)
changing of the guard is the only time bob tried to sound like bruce, instead of the other way around. guess what, pretty good!
Slipping behind here, so picked one at random, which is Deceit by This Heat from 1981. The album cover is a good representation of what we’ve got here, this is ugly, angular experimental post punk, that’s very hard to get a grip on. You get little scatterings of tunes like the openings of SPQR and it sounds promising in little parts. Overall, I’d say this was a pretty difficult listen, though with plenty of interesting bits buried in here.
