Yeah I like it a hair less than Holland but it has that good shaggy band vibe.

Yeah, I got the sense from reading about this album today that it's the rule rather than the exception. Too bad, because the first half is really great!

My mom has this double-LP and it's absolutely unimpeachable:

But honestly there's a charm in their records even if they're rarely wall-to-wall killers.

My absolute favorite rap album. Such a statement; he packs all the hughs and lows and messiness of life into it. “Suicidal Thoughts” is... yow.

Today was Gladys Knight and the Pips - Nitty Gritty from 1969, which was absolutely fantastic and a reminder that I need to listen to more of them.

Equal parts soulful and funky, with even a little bit of psychedelia in some of the guitar work buried in the background, it's an incredibly strong collection of songs. Mostly covers, with a handful of originals, there's fantastic performances of Cloud Nine and I Know I'm Losing You, both of which I recognise from their Temptations versions, and All I Could Do Was Cry, which is one of my favourite Etta James songs.

Relatively unusual for these groups with a woman lead singer, and a backing group of male voices, which isn't something that I can think of many other examples of, but works well as the Pips complement Gladys well, who has an absolute incredible voice, which is used to all it's power here.

Really really good, and a good reminder to check out more of their music.

Pet Shop Boys are so so so so good why didn’t anyone tell me? Behaviour came out a few weeks before my birth, I literally could’ve been listening to it my entire life.

Coming to accept the fact that I'm probably not going to catch up at this point, but I still aim to finish the 28 albums even if it carries over to March.

Perfectly comfortable getting this one written up before hearing the whole album.

Today was The Sky's the Limit by The Temptations, which was fantastic. Of the eight tracks on the album, I knew "It's Just My Imagination (Running Away From Me)", which is a wonderful song and one of their best.

The album as a whole is equal parts funky and smooth to brilliant effect. There's also even a slightly classical sweep to some of these tracks, with "Just The Exception", with what sounds like Timpani drums in combination with a sweeping string section that makes it soar. There's also a lush and funky 13 minute epic, "Smiling Faces Sometimes", and then even a bit of distorted fuzzy blues rock guitar, paired with joyous horns on "Ungena Za Ulimwengu (Unite The World)".

Really great listen - enjoyed it heaps, as I always expected I would, but would really recommend this to anyone, as it’s stylistically varied but still completely cohesive throughout.

Kind of mind-blowing that this record came out a couple weeks before Aretha turned 25 and she could already sing like that.

Haha, those super guttural growls are usually not my thing at all but I found myself quite enjoying the album overall. Not sure its something I'm going to be rushing back to but I certainly didn't hate it.
