Yeah Overcast is the best for IOS, but again can't say for macOS. Overcast in my opinion has the best speed settings, you can speed it up and put on "smart speed" which trims silences. I think other apps try something similar but none of them sound quite as natural to me. Also the "volume boost" on Overcast is great. Only downfall of Overcast in my opinion is I don't feel like the discover section is very robust. I usually end up browsing for new stuff on Apple's built in podcast app and then download them on Overcast.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of awesome things about Overcast, sucks they don't have a macOS app.

  3. I use undercast on macOS. It’s basically a container for the overcast web app. I’ll link it later if I remember

I also love Overcast. The smart speed feature has saved me 121 hours. That number is insane to me

It sounds like I should really turn on smart speed. I never have, just because I figured it wouldn't make that much of a difference, but wow.

I mean I've used the app for at least 2 years and listen to podcasts at work for most of the day, so that's how it adds up.

Good to know. I listen to about two hours of podcasts on workdays, and I've got such a backlog of shows I'm working through that it sounds like smart speed would really help things out.

Yeah you should really try it out. I speed mine up to 1.5 and turn on smart speed but even just turning on smart speed will save you a bunch of time. If some of the podcasts you listen to have hosts that take frequent long pauses this will be a game changer if you're looking to cut through your backlog.

I know I listen to way too many podcasts because I've saved 1272 hours using smart speed. I have been using the app since it launched, but still, that's... a lot.

  10. Wait how do I see how much time I’ve saved? I listen to most things at 2x and I never don’t have smart speed on.

Edit: looks like I’ve saved 115 hours. I’m kinda disappointed it wasn’t more.

Jesus @Deanna thats insane, I've been using overcast for like 2 years and have saved only 50 hours

Hah yeah it’s a bit much. I’ve been trying to unsubscribe from some podcasts that I’m just not enjoying as much anymore and I’ll delete episodes I don’t care for. But every time I do that a new one pops up that I want to check out so I’m still subbed to somewhere in the 60-70 range I think.

  13. You're the only person I knew to have me beat before I quit using Overcast regularly. I had 314 hours saved prior to last April. My Breaker stats since only add another 70. You're either a monster or the podcasters you listen to most often take very long pauses.

I’m guessing it’s a little bit of both.

"Cold: The Susan Powell Case Files" is probably the best podcast I've ever listened to at this point.

Currently listening to Casefiles 3 part podcast on The Silk Road, it is EXCELLENT. I'm going to read American Kingpin after listening to this.

  19. Has anyone listened to The Dropout? Three episodes in and I like it a lot. They're turning it into a mini series on Hulu.

Any recommendations for comedy podcasts? I'm looking for anything that's light and funny—RPGs, standup, stories, anecdotes, whatever. The only caveat is that I'd love the episodes to be on the shorter side—anything from 15 minutes to 45 minutes or something.

I’m a huge fan of Brunch. It might take a few episodes to get some of the recurring jokes but they typically talk about music, movies, and tv shows and have some pretty good guests on occasion. Randy Havens, who plays Mr. Clarke on Stranger Things, is on a few episodes. Episodes are usually in the 45 minute range and I think they’re hilarious.

I wouldn’t say either of these are strictly “comedy” but they usually aren’t longer than 35 min and are entertaining

Every Little Thing - listeners call in with questions about little random life things and the host calls back with researched answers. Examples: Can duct tape really fix everything? What happens to confiscated TSA stuff? Public toilets: Sit or Hover? What would happen to your body in space? Are “speed enforced by aircraft” signs a lie?

Personal Best - two guys help other people accomplish things they’ve always wanted to accomplish. Examples: Delivering a baby cow. Landing a backflip. Becoming less dependent on the snooze button. Experiencing a balloon drop.
