Little of both. It's not very engaging, and it's just long. By the time "Birdie" starts I'm using zoned out.
I'm with Jason. The middle of this album is a slog for me. I lose interest after Leaving LA and don't pick it up again until The Memo.
Ive found it to be a lot easier to get through if you skip Leaving LA. Good song but its pretty tiring.
Yeah, sequencing this album must have been tough given how much of the songs are ballads (or simply not high-energy). "Birdie" does put a large dent in what momentum is there and for that reason alone it's probably the weakest track this album is still blowing my mind almost daily tho
This is a "sit down and drink bourbon while contemplating existisntial crisis' and the meaning of life" kind of an album. Ha
I've come to like Birdie a good amount. Nothing I don't like, but maybe A Bigger Paperbag is my least favorite. I think Leaving LA pretty much ties the record together.
Agree with Jason. I tried around four times and Im starting to come to the conclusion this maybe isn't for me.
I think this might be his best but it's also not as consistent or accessible as Honeybear. Idk, they all have their merits
I also have a lot of trouble getting through this, I think it's really dull. But I guess that means I like it more than his last, which I straight up hated.
Yeah I really don't know how you couldn't find at least 1 thing you like on Honeybear. Don't think this will ever top that for me. Honeybear is a top-10 type classic
It took tons of ambition to make this record too. He should feel like an idiot to think Leaving LA would work. But man.... does it work.
Locked down my tix for May 5th. They were stupidly expensive, probably because he's playing a legitimate theatre instead of a club, but I don't have any plans for festivals this summer so it's a bit more justifiable lol.
Yeah, it almost had to be "Total Entertainment Forever" and "Ballad of the Dying Man" tonight. Also, I've found that they're not bad songs by any means, but removing "Birdie" and "When the God of Love Returns There'll Be Hell to Pay" from this album would tighten up the listen and make the momentum a bit more consistent.
