While I'm at it here is my favorite J. Tillman songs Milk White Air - prolly one of my favorite tunes ever Howling Light James Blues Ribbons of Glass A Seat at the Table
Wow this was way harder than I thought: Pure Comedy Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution True Affection Holy Shit Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings But it feels ridiculous to leave out the Ideal Husband and Chateau Lobby, and honestly several others.
Things That Would Have Been Helpful Pure Comedy True Affection Chateau When the God of Love Returns (or I Went to the Store) I’ve never listened to Fear Fun
You should change that. Milk White Air is painfully beautiful and James Blues sounds like it could have been on Fear/Fun. The lyrics are excellent.
God damn it. Change that as well. When it first came out I enjoyed it enough but I didn't consider myself a FJM fan until Honeybear. I'm in love with F/F now.
When the God of Love Returns is an underrated tune. "Try something less ambitious the next time you get bored" Love that line. And yes, what @zmtr said. You've got to listen to Fear Fun. That's where all the really jamming songs come from during the live show.
My sister had been trying to get me to listen to FJM for a few years now but I always put it off. Then the song “Pure Comedy” came out and that really struck a chord with me so I listened to that album but it took me a really long time to digest. From there I moved onto Honeybear so, I’m just working my way backwards.
ive been listening to his pre fjm stuff recently, ive only really skimmed through it before. way different but very good.
Hmmm how about a top five from each album because it's impossible to choose Funtimes in Babylon Nancy From Now On Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings I'm Writing a Novel Everyman Needs a Companion I Love You, Honeybear Chateau Lobby #4 When You're Smiling and Astride Me The Ideal Husband I Went to the Store One Day Things That Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution A Bigger Paper Bag Smoochie So I'm Growing Old on Magic Mountain In Twenty Years or So some combination of these would be a perfect setlist imo
Yep. It sounds like 70s era folk but really ghostly and spiritual sounding. I'm assuming this video was titled this way to get more views but here's a super fucking rad performance of him and his band from a while ago. Would have loved to had seen a show like this.
Might just be a superfan, but I don't have any trouble getting through this in one sitting. It's still top five for me this year.
I listened front to back quite a bit when it first came out but pretty rarely now. I never found the length to a hindrance though
The long running time fits with the epic themes and overall 'statement piece' angle of the record. But it also works as an exceptional short album if you just play the first four tracks, God of Love and Magic Mountain. Could throw in the closer as well.
This is one of those albums where I personally love it but also understand why a lot of people don't.
