Saw him at Coachella and he is truly a remarkable frontman. His mic didn't work when he first came on stage and the way he exited and restarted was so charming Definitely going to try seeing him in October
One of his guitars wasn't amplifying right tonight and he just whispered "somebody's getting fired tonight". Then he hit himself in the face (I think?) with his mic stand during Smiling and Astride me and it obviously threw him off but the way he laughed it off made it actually endearing and funny. He made a joke about offering refunds at point of purchase for the technical difficulties. It got a good laugh.
Loved the no photos stage set up he had for honeybear. Have a really cool photo of it that I felt guilty taking. Ha
I also really appreciated the theater setting. Having this be all seated really added to the show I think, because it felt like a real show (as in a Broadway type show). Normally I hate sitting at a concert, and everyone stayed sitting during the Pure Comedy songs, but it actually worked really well, because it was like Josh was up there telling the story. It was really cool, and it highlighted just want a talented performer he really is. His voice doesn't miss a beat and he just seems effortless on stage. I hesitated to buy tickets to see him again in September before I had even gone to last night's show (it seemed like a little overkill), but I'm so glad I did now, because there's no way I won't be dying to see him again come September.
I know this has been stated a million times but birdie and leaving LA just kill the flow of the album for me. First 4 songs are great then it completely loses steam for me
Birdie is definitely the weak point. It does build to that glorious but brief crescendo, but a couple of the previous songs have already used that trick anyway. Leaving LA works as an epic centrepiece to me.
I like the song. But I don't love it on the album. Or at least where it is sequenced. But liking this album overall with time.
I hear others complain about Smoochie but I really dig that track. Thematically it's an outlier but also kind of not because it's about his wife calming him down when his brain is going mad with these existential thoughts exhibited throughout the rest of the record.
People say his "persona" is insufferable or whatever, but he can be really entertaining sometimes, like with that.
this is the only time his weird shtick has been good and not the pot's calling the kettle insufferable Ryan Adams Calls Father John Misty “the Most Self-Important Asshole on Earth” in Twitter Rant | Pitchfork
Not sure this has anything to do with his "shtick" though, it's just a joke. I'm not even sure that I'd call it a shtick anymore tbh but that's a different, longer conversation
sorry wrong word haha, it was funny, and I agree with him that Chuck E. Cheese deserves our respect, he serves pineapple pizza he knows what's up
