This is fantastic and I know it will take dozens more listens for all of the lyrics to sink in. Title track and Screamland are enormous.
Yeah even though the songs haven’t all sunk in yet, I love how widescreen the music is. When “Screamland” opens up it’s like those TV commercials where they have the black bars on the bottom of the screen and then expand to make it feel more expansive.
The vinyl package for this is really nice. Always hesitant around the "white guy, Eastern spirituality" vibes but the artwork inside the gatefold has lots of aliens and Devil's Tower artwork and a couple of Mickey Mouses coming out of a vat of acid with guns lmao. There's also a poem(?) on the insert I can transcribe and post later if people are interested. I haven't Googled it yet, so I'm unsure if it's his or not. My Vertigo Vinyl variant looks great.
Listening to his How Long Gone podcast episode and he basically says there’s a part 2 / another record coming.
LMAO he says he turned down “The GDP of South Dakota” from A&W Canada who wanted to use Real Love Baby as their theme song
also the story of how he got hired is pretty funny, I guess FJM just cruises the Instagram hashtag #graphicdesign to find people to work on his albums lmao during the chloe era, he did more merch and stuff for the album then but I guess he did a few things for this album too
No One Does Ego Death Like Father John Misty Best review yet, even if they feel differently than I do about certain songs.
man I finally sat down with this yesterday and it's gorgeous. harping on how big "Screamland" sounds. kinda checked out on him after Honeybear but I'm excited to dive back in.
For me the highlights are Mahashmashana, Accidental Dose, and Screamland but the whole album is great Being You is the one that I kind of forget about but it's still good
Also in my top spot. And there were plenty of albums I adored this year. This one stands apart because it feels like a payoff he's been building to for years. Reminds me a lot of Norman Fucking Rockwell in that respect.
I genuinely get more excited every single time I hear I Guess Time Just Makes Fools. Unbelievably special song
