After one listen I’m not quite sure how I feel about this, which was somewhat expected based on my reaction to the 4 singles. It’s a little too lush for my taste. He’s always had that grand orchestral element, but on this record it’s almost a little overwhelming. “Buddy’s Rendezvous” is excellent though. I’m sure all of this will grow on me.

God’s Favorite Customer got great reviews on release and then disappeared completely when Year End lists came out. Such a head scratcher. Some days it’s my favorite FJM.

Yea for sure, I mean more it terms of publication year end. Felt like it faded fast. But maybe my judgement is clouded because I thought it deserved the highest praise possible.

On my first listen now. Goodbye Mr. Blue completely wrecks me. (Everything But) Her Love is an instant favorite

  9. "Buddy's Rendevous" is gorgeous

I'm a sucker for the "old Hollywood" vibe of this record, not sure if that's an accurate description but it makes sense in my mind

This album is just too fucking depressing for me, it’s even more so than pure comedy.

"Kiss Me (I Loved You)" is definitely channeling "I Love You Honeybear" right? I keep hearing the latter like he's inverting it and making it sadder

Just going to add to the praise. Reaching the end of my second listen now and it's a gorgeous album. I love how much he committed to the Old Hollywood vibe if that's what we're calling it. The Next 20th Century is pretty immediately my favorite closer of his. I can't wait to spend more time with it and really soak everything in cus I'm pretty sure this one will just get better with time. And I'm going to need to hear Lana's cover of Buddy's Rendezvous immediately.
