Funny Girl is really great, very cool direction for him. I can't wait to hear the rest. Decided to be fiscally responsible and just get the blue vinyl. It was tough to pass on the Lana 7" but I know I'll never actually play it

Definitely agree people have it out for him for some reason. I have a friend who always says he's a horrible person when I bring him up but can never tell me what exactly he did to make her think that. Even when Norman Fucking Rockwell came out everyone was saying the title track was about him and now here is Lana recording his music. Truly bizarre

I got into FJM after already being familiar with the discourse around him and I remember being like.....that's it? I know he gave some silly interviews and had that freakout during the Pure Comedy era but you'd think he was a problematic demon the way people hate on him. Dude just seems like a sarcastic but self-aware smartass; I've always found him mostly funny and entertaining.

Anyway the new song is pretty great. The old Hollywood orchestral vibe is so perfect for his voice and it has a weirdly sinister vibe that I feel like will make more sense in the context of the album.

the weirdest thing is people treat him like some court jester that tries to be overly witty and jokey in his lyrics when over half of his career (with it appearing to continue on this album as well) are pretty deeply personal lyrics and the complete opposite lol

it’s been pretty obvious for a few cycles now people either don’t listen to the music at all or only give it a cursory listen without engaging before writing their tweets and pieces and only fully engaging with interviews/press cycles

He writes some great songs, but I find him to be a pompous blowhard and it does take away from the music for me. I will check it out regardless though and try to avoid any interviews this cycle. Maybe I'll come around.

My eyes definitely rolled out of my skull when I read that Pitchfork blurb the other day. Obnoxious.

  12. I mean I get it. People who take issue with him must not be in the poem zone

great song. love him and love his music. never understood the problem people have with him but that’s probably because I actually pay attention and read his lyrics which are far more revealing than any interview he’s done

The most cringe thing I’ve ever read in my life lol what the fuck is this

  16. Meanwhile, the single is a million miles away from anything mentioned in that blurb lol. You'd think God's Customer would have tipped people off but nah

  17. Just weird that people love to create villains when the number of prominent assholes in music is literally neverending lol

anyway, time to listen to God's Favorite Customer on repeat for the next three months

I think this is the first live video I saw from him and it made me like him a lot more than I expected to. Like the idea that he's this pretentious asshole that thinks he knows everything is kinda silly when you actually listen to the way he talks about his songs.

Also it's like...it's kinda fun when artists show personality? Most of them are egomaniacs anyway so I'm here for ones that say hilariously absurd things like “I love the exhilaration of feeling a pull quote come out of your mouth—the words just taste better." I'll save my dislike or disappointment in artists whose music I enjoy for like, Josh Homme kicking photographers in the face and stuff like that.

I listened to GFC earlier for the first time in a minute and yea it still hits just like I remember. I had to listen to Just Dumb Enough to Try like 3 times in a row.

I'm on Fear Fun now and realizing I consistently underrate it in my head.

all his stuff is just amazing. the j. tillman albums are serene. singing ax is up there with the FJM material imo.

  23. Yeah it is borderline impossible for me to rank his albums. He doesn't miss.

My brother turned me on to Fear Fun before ILYH and there was a period where I really wasn't listening to anything else

I completely forgot he had other albums. Pretty sure I've listened to at least a couple of them but probably none more than once. I'm going to get on that this week.
