Nearly finished John's section, though I did take a sidetrip to pick up Jess & Cheeseburger.

Man, this game is hard to stop playing....had so much fun last night just running to each mission and getting distracted along the way.

The way they made missions and objectives so much more natural in just traveling around the map is really great.

Also, it doesn't take long to get cash and get guns you want. I kind of dig the building up the bank. Though I found myself in the beginning being like "maybe I should just buy some silver..." maybe that was their intention...

I don't really care to do the missions so I'm just running around with boomer going to every location and trying to kill people with a pipe.

    It's fun.

not sure if i agree lol, i loved AC Syndicate & Watch_Dogs 2 probably more than this. AC origins is also very very good (tho overwhelming). this is the most fun i've had in Far Cry in some time but i don't enjoy it like the other Ubi series. anyway:

As much as I dislike Colin's politics (he's an 'anti-SJW' type, RW libertarian) and he might come across as arguing for different reasons than I would, but what he says about ~11 minutes in is what I was saying in the VG thread - RE: the way Far Cry is made and what it does as a series.

Moreover, the way the antagonists speak, esp the leader, sounds very religious, cult-like, right-wing, etc. "They'll take away our guns, our freedom, our faith." - Joseph, literally at the beginning of the game. Then the comments that are like "You must atone" from John. And then there's Faith, who explains how her past of being abused, bullied, and isolated led her to feel free with Eden's Gate because she didn't feel judged by Joseph. So far, I'm seeing some semblance of explanations and metaphors, and since I haven't finished the game, I don't want to comment too much on whether it's good enough or not and whether it really delves into why this cult started and why Joseph thinks he's doing good, etc etc. But it touches upon more than I thought it would (again, SO FAR. I only just started Faith's region, so I haven't gotten to Jacob and obviously not Joseph - also, do you not notice how their names are all very much 'Christian like' - John, Jacob, Joseph, Faith? Eh, just came to my mind lol).

And there is even that video I posted up there of "Hurk Drubman Sr" that is a literal parody of a modern-day right-wing politician ("these syrup sucking socialists and their 300 gender pronouns. I'm going to build a 300 foot ice wall." etc etc).

It's pretty obvious what kind of people (right wing, cultish, overtly religious) Ubi is commenting on. Heck, they were more direct with politics with AC Syndicate (one of your allies is Karl Marx, and Evie Frye literally asks Queen Victoria to stop her "imperialistic adventures") and Watch_Dogs 2 (commentary on being black in America (how people expect black people to speak in everyday conversation is one example), gentrification, corruption, cyber hacking, etc). None of these games are perfect, obviously - but they've done a lot more than other games and series have both in terms of diversity, inclusion, and commentary, and I *still* don't see this kind of vitriol thrown at other companies who have done the complete opposite (think of how GTA portrays people (esp women) for example).

I still think Far Cry 5 is being picked apart because it's prone to be, as it's more susceptible to criticism because of its setting (the US) and its fair relevance to modern day Western politics. So this is something that is obviously very easy for Western media to capitalize on because of their knowledge of their own issues in their respective countries (UK/US). This game isn't literally about Trumpists/alt-right types, though. It's about a religious doomsday cult. There's nothing in the cult about it being remotely sexist or racist either. In fact, the art cover for the game shows both a woman and a black man who seem very much comfortable being in this group. And this is because the group is primarily about its religious supremacy / cultish ideals. There's often talk about the "Collapse" (end of the world) and that's primarily what this focuses on.

So yes, while there's similarities and overlaps, this isn't meant to be directly related to what is happening 'right now'. The game sprinkles some things that relate to it (the Hurk drubman voicemail, the "video tape" and a Russian, etc) but these are minor things, side quests and easter eggs, that I think were probably added late in the game's development and don't have primary relation to the group (Eden's Gate) that you're supposed to be fighting.

^ Hmm. Just finished Colin's video and he said these two paragraphs lmao.

If I need to correct any of this later, let me know, but I just wanted to get out my current thoughts because people really are trying to make the antagonists something that they're not.

P.S The similarities between Koresh/Seed etc that Colin mentions make sense (even their appearance is somewhat similar). I'm not lavishing in the fact I agree w Colin about his commentary - but it's true sometimes commentators, people online, and journalists are going over board here. In this case, being upset that Far Cry 5 literally isn't about the alt-right or something drastically similar to it. Ubi's been critical through its games of these types of politics and have made plenty of references, and if those aren't obvious enough, I dunno what to say.

Really enjoyed reading your thoughts @lightning - I share a lot of those sentiments. Noticed the name thing when I was explaining the premise to a friend. Had one of those "oh shit" moments.

Also, I got Peaches last night and now I'm really ready to play.

Watched the show a couple weeks ago, it has it’s flaws but Kitsch and Shannon are both incredible. I’ve always been fascinated by Waco and Jonestown.

The Father and David Koresh definitely share some of the same traits.

The opening to this and Wild Wild Country are so eerily similar in the townsfolk giving talking heads about their cults.
