I’ve had a few readers reach out and say that Say Anything announced last night at their show at the Beacham in Orlando, FL that they had recently finished recording their new album. 10 years ago I would have been stoked for this, haven't loved the last few albums but always down to check out what they are doing.
I thought they finished a while ago, I know Max and Will Yip tweeted something like that. Anyways looking forward to seeing a release date soon!
really hoping Max is done with the low-fi, garage band production from I Don't Think It Is and Two Tongues Two
Does this band hold up if I've never heard any of their albums or are they largely a product of their time/nostalgia act at this point?
the more time passes, the further Hebrews climbs my list of favorite Say Anything records. there's some cringe to be had, but as an experimental venture they did damn well. i want another record like that where they attack it with a fully fleshed out idea of "different". some days i like John McClane more than Belt.
I'm very excited for this either way. I can't say that I 'hate' any SA record, but the nostalgia, I think, helps on some of those older records. The last record, had it not been such a polarizing surprise, might have been given a better shot. I listened to it again a few weeks ago and it wasn't terrible by any means, just not great.
You should at least check out Is A Real Boy. There may be some parts that don't hit quite as good as it would've if you had listened when it came out, but I think it still holds up. I'd also recommend Self Titled - that one probably holds up the best.
