  10. If ever you’re mad at brackets, look back on Lullabye getting any votes at all over Headfirst Slide, and remember how silly brackets really are

Eh, in the end it's not the bracket's fault if people make these weird choices!

W.A.M.S.– I’ve always had a soft spot for this song, it’s catchy but it’s got this weird darkness to it that’s really unique. It’s got a cool bridge too; small detail, but there’s a kinda jazzy guitar lick that just kinda pops up for a couple seconds in there and it’s stuff like that, things I notice years later, that make this album so special to me. They did so many unexpected things on this album but still managed to not make it all seem forced or sacrifice their core identity.

Tiffany Blews– This one is sorta tough. For a long time, What a Catch was my favorite Folie song, and I still adore it, but over the years a couple songs have surpassed it, and this is one. This song has maybe best chorus FOB has ever written, it’s honestly a bummer it didn’t end up a hit. One of my favorite things about this album is the vocal layering that’s all over it, and this song has some of the best examples of it. I really think it’s a huge part of this album’s identity. It’s almost like all the little harmonies, call-and-response, and background vocals are like their own characters in the album. Idk. I love it.

(Coffee's For Closers)– I want to start by saying that America’s Suitehearts is a good song that gets way too much hate. The verses have awesome intertwining guitar work and the pre-choruses are so good. That said, Coffee’s For Closers is an absolute monster of a song. It’s urgent, and has one of the most impassioned performances Patrick has given, but still carries this sense of fragility to it (probably due largely to the lyrics). The strings throughout the song are beautifully arranged, providing an interesting juxtaposition against the pounding, marching band-esque drums. It’s just such a wonderfully executed song and I’m glad it seems to be a fan favorite.

Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet– Lullabye didn’t stand a chance. This is, for my money, not only the best song on this album, but the best song FOB has written period. Patrick’s performance here is otherworldly, so confident and shows off his range while managing to stay tasteful. It also boasts maybe the most intricate instrumentation/arrangement of any FOB song to date, with those horns bouncing through the verses and pre-choruses, dropping out on a dime for the stripped-down piano-led choruses without sounding jarring. The guitar work accentuates and adds weight and grit, rather than being a driving factor to the song. Everything about it is just so well-done and impressive that I’m still listening to it nearly ten years on and blown away by the minutiae of it nearly every time.

Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes– This was difficult, I really love both of these songs but I have to go with Disloyal. I think this is the best opener of any FOB album by far, which is saying something since this band is very good at openers. The introduction alone is one of my favorite moments on the album, honestly; it’s so bare and tranquil that it feels almost like a misdirect, as it gives way to one of the most anthemic, huge songs the band has written. I think this song has my favorite lyrics on the album, overall... maybe.

    The (Shipped) Gold Standard–
This one was relatively easy for me as Shipped is among my favorites on the album and 27 is among my least favorites. I love every song on the album, so even my least favorites here are better than some of my favorites on their other albums tbh. The verses of Shipped have such a cool feel to them, they’ve always really stood out to me for some reason, and the chorus is a total knockout too, I love how Patrick makes use of his falsetto in it. I can’t really think of anything more to say rn lol I’m running out of steam, but yeah it’s just a really wonderful pop-rock song.

For the record, I went with Lullabye for sentimental reasons (it was on the first mixtape I made for my current wife). It's just a cute little ditty, man.

I think "Tiffany Blews" is such a better song than "Donnie," which occupies the same space as "Save Rock & Roll" but worse. This is nuts.
