Is "Throw your cameras in the air..." From (Coffees For Closers) a reference to Throw Ya Gunz by Onyx?
I found this quote from Jason Molina I don't think Fall Out Boy did it maliciously though. They love to reference everything. Still wild to me.
If they took his words and didn’t let him know about it or give him credit then that seems pretty malicious to me. Using “oops I did it again” as a lyric is one thing, that’s an easily recognizable piece of culture, but most people hearing “why put a new address on the same old loneliness” in a FOB song are going to assume that came straight from Pete’s brain.
That's always a weird area to me. I remember with Taylor Swift's All Too Well when she used a matt nathanson line in the song and he made it known he wasn't pleased and a lot of people defended Taylor because it's homage, But idk if there is no credit or the person clearly didn't know about it and doesn't like the usage is it appropriate? But then I think like what if someone is kinda stuffy and would object to any usage of any of their work ever, like can that work then never be referenced directly in other art? I'm not an artist soooo I have no idea about anything lmao
There's always a chance it was just parallel thought. But they had similar issues arise in regards to a couple songs on IoH so who knows?
Art should be free to be repurposed by other artists in their own work. Petes writing really seems no different than sampling, but with words. Credit should be given but obviously you like, make your piece using the art before you ask for permission because for the most part that's how the process of creation goes.
And a lot of artists outright hate anyone who samples them on principle and I think those artists are full of shit. I hate the phrase "true artists" but true artists should invite other artists to use their work as a springboard for their own ideas.
I’ve never liked Lake Effect Kid, always sounded like a mess and just kinda there imo. Always ready for some new FOB though. Wonder if it’ll be just renditions of previous songs, new songs, or both.
being from the chicago suburbs, lake effect kid was my anthem when patrick sang "lake shore drive," i felt that
