Off topic thought: I stumbled upon From Under the Cork Tree on clearance at Target for $3 a few days ago. I've been revisiting that album and it got me thinking about their career in general as a result. Their last few albums were OK, but I never really loved them as much as I did up through Folie. It has nothing to do with production choice either. I'm all for them evolving/changing their sound. I think I just didn't like the songwriting as much over the past few albums. There are some highlights of course - I still regularly listen to SR&R's title track, Young Volcanoes, Jet Pack Blues, etc. I just never loved each of their last two albums in their entirety to the extent of everything they did before it. I hope they really surprise me this time around.
Honestly I'd only be surprised at what they gave us if they went back to the sound of everything up to Folie. They're not going to have things like live drums (for example) on any of their records ever again though, clearly, so I'm not getting my hopes up. It all may as well be a Patrick Stump solo album with Pete writing the lyrics and the full band playing together on tour only at this point.
soul punk is a great record that sounds absolutely nothing like post-hiatus fob (which is also gr8) not having "live drums" on a record is such a dumb thing to get annoyed by lmao
there are a lot of "live drums" on the last two records also hate to tell you this but most of the music you probably listen to have the drum parts "resampled" and are pretty much not live anyway
It's just an example of an aspect of their sound they seem uninterested in returning to, not necessarily a complaint. I'm just saying that they probably aren't going to be surprising anyone with what they do next. I enjoy their last two albums, there just wasn't a progression, in my opinion, between them like they had constantly up to Folie. They're very similar, to me, and I wouldn't call either of them "great" (whereas I would say that at least Folie and Infinity are).
I think there was definitely a progression on the last two and i expect there will be on the new record too.
I don't really care if the drums are real or fake, if the music is good then I'm down. Unfortunately, I'm no longer excited by the idea of new FOB music, but I'll always listen and give it a go.
Prediction: new single will get negative reception on here, and suddenly AB/AP will be seen as a better record
I doubt it will ever be seen as anything but their worst record so far by people on here and the longer term fans (depending on the TTTYG divide).
The thought of people considering TTTYG as their worst record makes me feel so old hahaha. I remember that record coming out and it being the best thing for pop-punk since new found glory in my opinion
I think I prefer AM/AP more than SR&R. Both have songs I dislike but I listed the ones I like from reach and it has 2 more than SR&R. (Although Save Rock & Roll is my favourite post hiatus song). The Kids Aren't Alright, Jet Pack Blues, Novocaine, Forth of July, Favourite Record, Immortals, Twin Skeletons. The Phoenix, Alone Together, Just One Yesterday, Miss Missing You, Save Rock & Roll. Certainly cannot see why the band would go back to a pre-hiatus sound, mainly because I don't think they would want to and I really doubt it would be financially beneficial. I may personally prefer that sound, but I'm also happy to keep getting good pop music from them.
Yea I'd put AB/AP in my top 3, with Folie, and FUCT. TTYG is my least favorite as well. That record doesn't hold up if you don't have the nostalgia attached to it (I was mostly familiar with the radio hits and a few others before the hiatus, and then I started diving in during the hiatus.) It also kind of baffles me that people are basically complaining about the single before we even hear it.
TTTYG must be the nostalgia for me. Makes me wish I could undo time and have the experience you all have hearing that after
I don't particularly like AB/AP, but I get what they were going for on it, and it's obviously not a bad record, it's just not for me. I much prefer SRAR and FAD. TTTYG is definitely their worst
Next time I know providing one example of an aspect of a band's old sound won't be enough to prevent my throat getting jumped down.
