Even just looking at Tell Mick, there are so many defined "moments" to me, and memorable/enjoyable pieces of that song that fit together so well. I just haven't found any songs in the last few albums to really excite me and engage me in so many different ways and different moments in the same song. The drumming intro that drops off and leads to guitar solo, building up to the drums coming back in and building up to Patrick coming in is such a STRONG beginning to me. dropping out to Patrick leading "I hope you choke..." and bringing in his second layered vocals as if he were his own dual vocals, while the music behind him changes to more playful and pulled back... Then getting to "so bury me, in memory" with the extremely memorable guitar pulls (or whatever its called, i'm not a musician) the the repetition of "so bury me, in memory" repeating, leading to the drum & guitar instrumetal stop, building up to the big drop, and ending with "so bury me, in memory" fading out the music at the end... AND THEN that leading directly into the next song. You can tell me that the technical arrangement, or Patricks vocals, or anything is technically not better... but that's not what I am talking about with arrangements. There are no songs in the last few albums that are so defined like this song, or many on the other albums, to me
Literally describing a basic af pop-punk song, and structure found in hundreds if not thousands of songs (including multiple Fall Out Boy songs). The word arrangement usually means changing/adding/reconceptualizing previous work, and the song arrangements on TTTYG are as basic standard pop-punk as you can get.
I defended AB/AP a lot at the time but it hasn't held up well for me... SR&R on the other hand is still great. I'd still rank FAD as my favorite by a long shot, but all their albums before it are great as well, with TTTYG being the weakest for me. That being said I think it's held up pretty well despite being a product of its time.
OK, and again that is your opinion that you are calling fact. I completely disagree, I think that SRAR is full of "basic af" arrangements, as you put it. I don't find TTTYG basic or standard, the live in the pop punk world obviously, but they do it the best. You aren't going to convince me otherwise just because you think it's right.
Saying "I prefer simple, straightforward, and derivative song structures" is fine. But let's not pretend or argue they haven't written far, far, far better "arranged" songs elsewhere in their career. TTTYG is the band, admittedly, aping Midtown/Saves the Day. It is a fact that they use better and more interesting "arrangements" in later albums. You not liking them doesn't change that.
No, I am saying that I am not talking about technical arrangements, and you are. Two different things. You are referring to the parts of music you can study, I am talking about the things in music that you feel.
And don't get me started on "Andy is a session drummer" and how ridiculous that statement is about a) session drummers, b) Andy's contributions to the two albums.
Underrated album. So overlooked in their discog because of how huge Cork Tree was and how beloved TTTYG is. Thanks for re-linking to the review @Jason Tate . I will legitimately never forget rushing out to the store to buy this album in 2007, throwing it on, and just being dumbfounded that Jay-Z was doing the intro to "Thriller." It was such a crazy moment for them, to have one of the biggest stars in music show up on their album, even for just a moment. Also, just the audacity of their naming one of their songs "Thriller" was crazy on its own. And jeez I would be lying if I didn't say that "The Takeover, The Break's Over" isn't still one of my favorite FOB songs. I definitely think this is probably their "best" album, even if it isn't my personal favorite. I'm going to be giving it a spin for sure.
Gotta walk the line between: I'm embarrassed of my old writing and saying "I told you so" to all the haters.
I didn't like Takes Over until they released the music video and I got a crush on some of the black and white cat girls.
Been a while since Jason and Steve clashed just in time for Chorus 1 year anniversary some things never change
FUTCT IOH TTTYG FAD Most music ever made SR&R The rest of music ever made AB/AP That piece of shit "Punk" album they made.
I don't get the hate for that punk album. It's generic and not really creative, but it fits very well in a playlist with bands like The Hives, Royal Republic, or Billy Talent.
I'm not that into most of Cork Tree but Dark Alley, Sugar and a few others make it a worthwhile album for me. I loooove those songs.
