i don’t let ppl on here bother me that much. like i’ve said before i’ve got other things in life that actually matter to me more than this website. perhaps y’all should give it a shot before getting all in arms over covid!

 

the music on WATTBA is so fucking excellent Patrick could literally be singing about almost anything and I would still love it, but also as a listener lyrics come second fiddle to the music for me. music alone is such an expressive language and stirs up such strong emotional responses on its own for me, oftentimes it’s hard to even put words to the things it makes me think and feel. now obviously that isn’t to say I never notice lyrics or they never impact how I feel about a song or are unimportant, the right set of lyrics— songs that perfectly encapsulate the emotions the songs illicit or are just incredible poetry— can take a song to transcendent heights; and conversely lyrics that are so egregiously bad or obnoxious or offensive that they’re impossible to tune out can really sour or ruin the whole thing. but I find that those instances are so few and far between, at least for me, much more stuff exists to different degrees in-between those extremes of the spectrum.

small tangent but interestingly enough tho, as a songwriter myself, I have to feel confident about the lyrics or else the song will never materialize. and they’re the hardest part for me, songs/ideas will sit for years or sometimes never end up finished because the words never came to me, and yet sometimes the music and lyrics come out in one burst together and the song is written in less than an hour and it’s like the easiest thing ever. it’s weird how it works, and it’s funny how different my perspective is as a writer than as a listener.

and as far as Covid and quarantine goes, idk man I don’t want to get too into it really because it isn’t worth the headache but to be honest with you I find myself envious of people who have been able to just move on and find a sense of normalcy in the wake of all that. I understand at some point folks had to start doing that, but (at least so far) it has caused irreparable damage to my physical and mental health… as far as I can tell, I will be feeling the impact of it for an indefinite amount of time. and yeah everyone went through it but by no means did everyone have the same experience throughout it. and that’s not even to mention the fact that the politics of it all are so goddamn rancid like we could have taken it so much more seriously the whole time and bc we didn’t is why we have to “just live with it as part of our lives” while it’s still taking plenty of lives, and in doing so we are causing issues for so many folks who are disabled and/or immunocompromised who can’t just proceed like normal without adverse risk. that’s as much as I guess I will say because it really just is not worth it, I don’t want to play moral police or try to shame anyone for their stance on things bc it really is a waste of time and has been fruitless in my experience. just sucks where we’re at with all of this. and considering how much it has still been actively impacting me as a person I cannot blame anyone for it bleeding into their writing or art.

 

anyway, i’m off to check on one of the houses we’re flipping and then back to the day job
